Yes - there's always a place for tournaments. It's the best way to build heat for a division and or fighters.
Not in The UFC. They have excellent matchmaking, and any tournament besides TUF is going to be counterproductive, and result in a lot of downtime. TUF airs maybe 2-3 times a year, and is of great significance.. Quite possibly the most important tournament in Mixed Martial Arts today. Take UFC 146 for example, that card will surely deliver. With events occurring as often as they do, not to mention injuries, their is no need to tie up a division, and have the best come out busted up and in need of recovery all at the same time.
