Do undercards on PPV's matter?

Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by Holler, Dec 3, 2018.

Do you care about the quality of the undercard on a PPV?

  1. Yes of course I want lots of great fights for my money

    90.9%
  2. No, it's all about the main event, don't care what happens before that

    9.1%

I have a great solution to this. Why don't they pay us fans to watch poor undercards and then we can pay for the main event from the money they've paid us?

    They should do.

MMA does it, pro wrestling does it.

Suppose the difference is so much of the audience doesn't turn up till late.

You can never guarantee how good a main event will be so filling the card with good fights should mean that even if a main event disappoints the nights entertainment was still worth it.

A PPV undercard is very important, it adds value to the event.

Sometimes the main event is disappointing, and when that happens having good undercard match-ups prevent the buyers from feeling they wasted their money.

I remember that time. Those shows were great, in oz back then, you would have to go to a bar and watch It, closed circuit type deal. I remember turning up from fight one with the expectation that the undercard would be better than the main! I remember Fenech - Nelson on the undercard to Tyson-ruddock 2. I actually didn't even stick around for the main event. Once Fenech-Nelson was over I had to get a lift back home...lol!

Isn’t $80 the standard price now? Yeah they better be giving us good fights for that

One aspect which US fans may not need to consider is the time of the event. If it's in the early hours in Europe, then a decent undercard full of 50/50 fights can get you through the long hours before the main event.

Poor undercard fights which finish abruptly, may lead to excess exposure to Jonny Nelson, Steve Bunce or Carl Froch. Could our hard pressed emergency services cope?

Then there's the argument from natural justice, you are paying more so you deserve more.

    The prosecution rests.

A good event should have at least 2-3 decent fights. The main event can end quick or be boring. On the other side, it is boring to wait for the main event without having some other attractive fights.

I want to enjoy a full evening of Boxing so a good undercard is essential. Well matched shows build towards the climax of the top of the bill fight, from the prelim boys through the area level Fighters and up to the chief support which should feature guys at National Title level.
Those who are attracted to the event rather than the sport tend to only be interested in the main event. I always think it's a pity to see lads fighting in front of a largely empty arena.

They do to me anyhow. I’d like to think that on a undercard yer should get some good 50/50fights with some big names on them as well as a good main event as you wanna get good value for money honestly. Ain’t gonna pay anything for a card that’s got a crap undercard unless it’s something ridiculously good as a main event

Undercards matter if good matchups are there. Like the old Don King PPVs. Today's undercards though, are pretty shitty.
