Even if neither fighter proves they're p4p number 1, what's so exciting about Ward taking on Kovalev is we'll find out about Ward's chin: he'll either get knocked out or hurt, or he'll prove the doubters wrong and either withstand or nullify Kovalev's power.

I have thought about this fight. It comes down to two things.

Can Ward take away Krusher's jab, and just how mentally and physically tough is he? In the middle of the ring, if a boxing match breaks out Ward will likely win.

You could say to win, Kovalev is going to need to pressure and be okay with counters and getting hit, just like GGG was in his last fight. Kovalev's chin at light heavyweight isn't glass, but it's not a stone either. Ward can punch some.

    We'll see. I favor Kovalev.

there should still be a standard. if the fight finishes without fireworks and plenty of running and hugging then they failed to show a p4p fight which does not make the winner deserving. at this time of lots of corruption on judging and refereeing, the only credible proof is the outcome of the fight itself. a win by ko and clear tko is definite, winning on points by MD with higher punch output and accuracy is acceptable, but a SD is asking for a lot of doubts on corruption probably to set up rematches and make more money or just home-cooked in favor of the local fighter.

No because the winner would still have to face Adonis Stevenson to prove they are the king in the LW division.

Ward's resume means nothing, it's based on nostalgia and blind fanaticism

    Boone dropped Ward hard

Has Artur actually fought since surgery?

Do you understand the concept of p4p vs a divisional championship? Even those fanboys of the sanctity of lineal championships consider Ward and Kovalev p4p greater than Stevenson.

Well I don't rate Ward higher than Stevenson, that's just me as I don't buy into the notion that he is potentially p4p even if he were to win against Kovalev in some parallel dimension somewhere in some far away galaxy .

And even though I expect Kovalev to win, and win impressively, he still has to take care of that pimp to cement his as the undisputed king.

No. Ward needs to avenge his loss to Boone first.

i cant see how anyone can have ward still ranked in their p4p lists?? he hasnt fought anyone of note since 4 YEARS AGO when he beat dawson. however that said, a win over kov here will certainly get him back onto the list.

Ward is ranked well down in the PFP in most Rankings...he is behind Golovkin and Kovalev....His inactivity and some of His awful fights have done him no favours...if by some miracle He defeats Kovalev he will be inside Top 5 at least I would think....One thing is for sure Gonzalez will be still number 1 PFP after this fight.!!!!

I'd be happy to make the winner #1 p4p if the performance is impressive.

Who else would you have ahead? Pacquiao is old/semi shot, Floyd retired, GGG looks good but doesn't have the wins to be at #1, Lomachenko needs more fights. So the closest would be Gonzalez, but imo he wasn't that impressive in his last fight and if the Ward - Kovalev winner is more impressive it makes sense to place him at #1.

I voted 'yes' BUT I'm actually unsure.

It's not P4P to count the Super Six wins when considering Ward, that was far too long ago. We have to take on from his most recent reign over the period he was active i.e

    W Kovalev (A+ grade)
    W Brand (C grade) - didn't look very impressive
    W Barrera (B grade) - looked good
    W Smith (C grade) - who cares?

    vs

    Roman Gonzalez
W Cuadras (A/A+ grade) - looked impressive, but it was razor close
    W Arroyo (B+ grade) - looked impressive
    W Viloria (A- grade) - looked exceptional
    W Sosa (B grade) - looked exceptional
W coming off a great streak.
    - This run cemented Roman Gonzalez as not only a first ballot HOF'er but a Top 85 ATG.

    vs

    Sergey Kovalev
W Andre Ward (A+ grade - best win of the generation)
    W Chilemba (B grade)
    W Pascal x 2 (B grade)
    W Mohammedi (C grade)
    W Hopkins (B+ grade)
    W Everything else

If Kovalev gets the win, he could be no.1 P4P.

    Vasyl Lomachenko
    W Walters (A grade)
    W Martinez (B+ grade)
    W Russell Jr (A- grade)
    W Everything else

In 8 pro fights. Because he did it in a short time, he has a solid argument for no.1, too. But I'd make him P4P no.3 after a victorious Kovalev and Gonzalez.

Liked for the amount of thoughtful analysis, even though I don't agree with absolutely everything. For example, Pascal and Chilemba are clearly better than B class, both were top 10 and better than Barrera and probably Arroyo. Smith (C class) is not as good as Mohammedi.

I feel that Ward does deserve some, though not full, credit for the super 6 as he proved that his top level was the best in the division. Certainly it should do more for his p4p ranking than beating Smith or Brand.

I agreed with your conclusion. Good post.

I don't think it is as cut and dried as a yes vote here. Plainly others see it the same way because the vote is split right down the middle.
