They have a monopoly over boxing by making boxers sign contracts to exclusively fight on HBO. Because they have so many boxers in their roster, they are having difficulty paying and scheduling boxing matches. HBO is one of the reasons why there is very few boxing matches these days. There needs to be competition in the networks and not just Showtime. Promoters and HBO have been ****ing over boxing fans since the 1990's.
Hell yes or we would never ever see boxing on TV without HBO and SHOtime we might as well be in Australia ask boxing fans over ther how ****ed they are, they will tell you, consider youreself lucky to have at least have two cable options,
Personally, I love HBO's boxing broadcasts. Everything from the presentation, to the commentators...I think HBO does it right.
HBO is good at it. I just don't like paying so much money for something that can potentially be over in minutes...
Boxing would be ****ed without HBO, the amount of money they invest in fights in insane and no one else is prepared to pay that much money.
HBO is a good thing for boxing. They just need to stop this anointing ****. They should stop grooming boxers who haven't proven anything. Look at Berto, this guy's accomplished nada, and yet he's had promises by Greenburg himself of fight dates, he was guaranteed what, $1.5M? The hell with this logic from HBO. If they will groom or feature boxers, let them be the top dogs. And don't kowtow to these boxers picking safe fights. Force these top guys to face worthy guys, the big fights. That is what's missing from HBO. Other than that, it's heavensent for boxing.
HBO provides good fights....... HBO is more so needed than ever before.......... ABC, CBS & NBC ain't worth a **** on a paper plate anymore..... ESPN has always sucked, and USA is outta the boxing bidness....... HBO is great, but we need to choke a few promoters and rid us of the lousy PPV's that are being hyped way too much and often these days...... PPV has gotten out of hand..... Showtime has raised the stakes over the last few years, but they only air a fight of note every blue moon or so........ They need to kick-it-up a notch or two and be productive..... MR.BILL
HBo is not the problem. They loss the pipeline and now they have to assist in grooming prospects. There was a time when a young prospect would get exposure to fans through either: the Olympic/amateur experience (coverage of Olympic trials used to come on primetime, the those TEAM USA vs. the world competition were always on). Everybody in the USA knew the big name amateurs before they even turned pro (Ray Leonard, Mark Breland and the rest of the class of 84, Oscar De La Hoya, etc.) ABC's coverage of boxing on Wide World of Sports (like Greg Haugen, Terry Norris, Michael Nunn, James Toney, etc.) CBS' boxing coverage with Gil Clancy. (they broadcast the Mancini- Kim fight) USA Tuesday Night Fights, which used to broadcast some of the lesser known champions (Jorge Paez for example) ESPN's Friday Night Fights Right now, only Friday Night Fights is still going. Also, Berto's got a WW strap. I would stop short of saying he's accomplished nada.
I like HBO but I dont like the fact that there is HBO fighters, however not everyone is tv friendly so there you go. I have both Show and HBO and I cant complain
Agreed. I like HBO and see no reason to really protest against them. The sport would be MUCH poorer if HBO hadn't been around. Never forget that.
