    Note

This list is NOT intended to be comprehensive/exhaustive. I just put down a sensible number of people I thought of at time of typing. Feel free to not only agree or disagree with my choices, but also to make any additions you feel is merited. :good

    Criteria

To be included, all a fighter needs to have done is won his first world title after 1980 and before 1990, or have had the vast majority of his prime/peak occur in the 1980s.

    Tier 1

    Ray Leonard, Pernell Whitaker

    Tier 2

    Michael Spinks, Thomas Hearns

    Tier 3

Julio Cesar Chavez, Marvin Hagler, Salvador Sanchez, Evander Holyfield, Larry Holmes, Mike McCallum, Azumah Nelson

    Tier 4

Mike Tyson, Aaron Pryor, Hector Camacho, Donald Curry, Eusebio Pedroza

    Tier 5

Dwight Muhammad Qawi, Jung Koo Chang, Michael Nunn, Myung Woo Yuh

    Honourable Mentions

Jeff Chandler, Hilario Zapata, Brian Mitchell, Miguel Lora, Khaosai Galaxy, Jiro Watanabe, Jeff Fenech

decent list , its probably right but it looks odd having Tyson two tiers below spinks considering what he did to him.

Hagler and Pryor should both be tier two

Not even just his first title was in the 1970s, the guy won his 1st world title in 1972, and his boxing peak was in the mid-late 1970s.

Only someone with as notoriously feeble boxing knowledge as HEADBANGER would not know anything about the career of one of the greatest fighters in boxing history (he's a notorious troll, so it's to be expected). :rofl

Thomas Hearns should certainly be elevated to tier 1 as he has a very good resume with depth. Why you put whitaker there and not Hitman i will never know .... anyway.

Chavez, Hagler, should be moved to second tier as should evander holyfield.

Pryor should be between tier 2 and 3.

good thread,I think hearns, chavez and hagler are tier 1 as well.
Holy, tyson and sanchez would be tier 2.

Hagler should be higher, as should Hearns.

just seems a shame that arguably the greatest victory in the history of boxing v leonard is wiped away and forbids duran from being an 80s fighter, especially when you throw in the fact that he won world titles at 3 weights during the decade v davey moore and barkley. theres also 2 very close decision losses to ATGs benitez and hagler to throw in there but fair enough its your criteria.

I'll leave out the Pryor comment as his resume does not come close to justifying tier 2 or 3.

Anyway, so your top 2 tiers would be:

Tier 1 - Leonard, Whitaker, Hearns

Tier 2 - Spinks, Holyfield, Hagler, Chavez

Tier 3 - Sanchez, Holmes, McCallum, Nelson

You know what, that's a damn good suggestion for reorganization!

I still think maybe SRL and Pea should be above Hearns, as they won their biggest fights whereas he lost his (SRL beats Hearns/Hagler, Pea beats Chavez(imo)/Nelson, Hearns loses to SRL/Hagler), but maybe they should be in the same tier anyway.

But there's also an argument that McCallum does not deserve to be in a lower tier from Hagler, Holyfield and Chavez, and that Spinks (for his hw wins over Holmes) deserves to be higher than them, but hey, this isn't an exact science, I think your way is every bit as valid as mine. :good

I can't really conceive of a criteria which justifies Chavez and Hagler as being in the same tier as Sugar Ray Leonard.

Of course Pryor is my favourite fighter of all time, certainly no lower than tier 3.

Holmes another one of my favourite fighters deserves to stay put in tier 3. his run of defences was good but not deep enough as the names dont qualify tier 2 or 1.
Im not basing on who won their biggest fights, more of who they defeated period! but i see where your coming from. Hitman beat duran who is arguably better than anyone on Peas list.

Im not sure about Mccallum he is a tough one, his resume is quite deep, actually h could at a push be tier 2 also:good
