No mate, I was just suggesting "skewing" to TKO as a better word than "biasing". Please rant on!!:good
I agree with it Why would you make such a song and dance about a fight that didn't happen... when the guy you are discussing fought (and beat) better opponents anyway? When there are big fights, big nights and all sort of talking points to discuss and dissect? It makes no sense at all to think Witter is anything but a footnote in Hatton's career.
Hatton will be remembered for his losses to 2 ATGs and his win against one other. He'll also be remembered for his wins over in the US and probably a future HOFer. 5 years after Witter retires, most casual fans won't know really remember who he is, or won't care(if they even do anyway?). harsh but most likely true.
Witter was a good fighter. Not fought for a while now, never fought in the same circles as Hatton. But Hatton should definately have given him a shot, probably after the Zoo fight. But money and ego got in his way and it will always stick with knowleagable uk fans that they never fought. Ask a yank commentator about it though and they will surely say "Junior who? Is that the guy who did a marathon against Judah??"
I am a big Hatton fan, but the bottom line is that Witter was to big a risk at domestic level for FW to want to roll the dice and put Hatton in with him..... They could have paid Witter peanuts and got him out of the way early doors, if they thought it was a safe calculated risk... they didn't and that is why now we have threads like this...... I think that Witter would have beaten Hatton, styles make fights and I think he would have had savvy to draw Hatton into his own fight IMO :bbb
But then you have to put into context how much having a few threads Internet forums about Hatton-Witter will impact how Hatton is remembered in 20 years when his career is assessed from enough distance for people to be objective about the importance of the fight not happening to Hattons legacy. Thats where the example of Sibson-Graham comes in, there are a lot of similarities between the 2 situations IMHO and Sibbo is rightly remembered for what he did do, not for the one fight that didn't happen.
You have a valid point with the arguement with Sibson... I do think that Hatton legacy will be a mixed bag... he will aways be remembered for his last 2 KO's.... 2 steps to far... but fair play for putting himself up against the best out there.....With the exception of the Tyszu fight... I think that is the night Hatton peaked, stuck the flag in the top of the mountain, we were never to see him like that again IMO.... 2 fights that stand out for me are the Vinny Phillips fight and the Eamon Magee fight.... Hatton rolled the dice and lifted the bar against 2 tough cookies...at that time he was been brought on to slow... that was defo a step in the right direction....:yep
I am not sure in all honesty, but you're biasing (is that a word?) the question by including only U.K. journalists
That's a fair point.
Come on Joe, if youre going to quote me and try and pick little holes in my posts at least quote full sentences not just snippets that look like they may contradict each other when taken out of context. You've just taken one sentence, skipped over another and then cut another in half just to try and make me seem inconsistent and score a few points that are irrelevant to the point of the discussion we are having when if you read the full post its pretty obvious what I'm try to say. In that post I was agreeing with Flint that there may still be debate on Hatton-Witter amongst boxing fans 20 years from now but that I doubted it will be as one sided as Flint thinks. I then used the fact that, although its mentioned occasionally (and I didn't think anyone would take my use of "no one calls Sibson..." literally!!!), Sibson doesn't get any serious criticism for not fighting Graham as an example. I suppose if thats the only "slip up" of mine you can come up with in this thread then I should be flattered....;O)
No, I don't agree with it. Mainly because its a terrible example. Tony Sibson could do with Herol Graham on his resume. Not now obviously...there is no place for OAP boxing.
