    Agree
And since Pac models himself on Lee's believes one can say that also. Which is one reason his style is unorthodox... "be like water..."

Pac has something that Ali didn't: a whole nation all solidly behind him and looking up to him. If you want numbers, then that's 90 million Pinoys in the country and around 10 million more scattered all over the globe. As a cultural icon (the topic of this thread), Pac is greater than Ali.

Pac is going to go down as an all time great and if he beats Mayweather we are going to hear talk (right or wrong) of him being the GOAT.

It's going to be funny to hear the whining in 10-15 years about how boxing isn't the same as it was and we don't get fighters like Manny anymore. The same way all the previous greats have been made out to be these mythic fighters.

Please no mention of Bruce Lee, he was a minor Hollywood celebrity and his death made him more famous then he deserved. His legacy is a few overated action flicks and most of all it was convincing N.American dojo nerds that he was a god.

Rather than debate the meaning of "cultural icon" (which, again, is the topic of this thread and NOT boxing achievement), I would just like to refer you to a wikipedia article about the definition of those words:

    [ame]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cultural_icon[/ame]

A cultural icon can be a [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symbol"]symbol[/ame], a [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logo"]logo[/ame], [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Picture"]picture[/ame], [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Name"]name[/ame], [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Face"]face[/ame], [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Person"]person[/ame], [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Building"]building[/ame] or other [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image"]image[/ame] that is readily recognized, and generally represents an object or concept with great cultural significance to a wide cultural group. A representation of an object or person, or that object or person may come to be regarded as having a special status as particularly representative of, or important to, or loved by, a particular group of people, a place, or a period in [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History"]history[/ame].

With 100 million people (i.e. a whole nation plus its citizens leaving abroad)all supporting and looking up to Pac, I think he is greater than Ali as a cultural icon.

If we're talking about cultural impact, Bruce did far more than Manny ever could, globally.

Bruce sparked the interest in Martial Arts in the west, causing a ripple effect that stretches out into movies, tv, martial art gyms, heck even UFC.

IMO ODLH> Pac and Floyd as of now in this regard..

Pac COULD make it, but there's too much of a language barrier, I only see him extending his name in the Philippines.. Hell I think Floyd has a better chance as he's making an effort by throwing himself out there doing all these different gigs, etc..

Theres still something missing however that makes some of these people actually transcend boxing; and I just can't pinpoint it

    Irony.

If you'd travelled at all, you'd know that 80%+ of the Americas / Europe / Africa know who Ali is. He was voted "Sportsman of the century" by both Sports Illustrated and the BBC (two different continents). Most people who aren't boxing fans or Pinoys have never heard of Pacquiao, and he won't even be in the shortlist come the 21st Century's end.

I can't believe I'm having an argument over whether Pac's a bigger cultural icon than Ali. ****ing hell ... :patsch
