I just want to see how many on this board believe that Kovalev is a threat to beat Hopkins.

    Of course he's a threat.

    But because:

    1) Hopkins is very crafty and knows every dirty trick imaginable, and because

    2) the officials will help the home country boxer B-Hop against a foreigner especially a Russian,

I think Hopkins will win a close decision.

Actually, a lot of people on this board have discredited Kovalev which was the impetus to me creating this thread. If Hop were to win, I don't want to see people jumping in here saying that Kovalev wasn't any good or was overrated.

Nope. The guy has beat nobody, and is as crude as they get. He also has a suspect chin, and is untested over 12 rounds or against opponents that can move and dodge.

Kovalev is an hypejob, for now.

If he isn't massively, wildly overrated, his currently rightful lofty ranking combined with the style possesses several of the qualities needed to defeat older fighters, let alone ancient ones, and specifically Hopkins.

He's a threat because Hopkins is 50. If Hopkins can perform like he did three years ago against Pascal he will thrash Kovalev.

Running back through Hopkins LHW career I don't actually see anyone who I'd considered more of a threat (aside from Zaggy and Dawson) with the possible exception of Tarver back in 2006.

Half the guys in his early LHW run were MWs and/or semi shot - Pavlik was considered a threat but IMO was neither more skilled nor harder hitting than Kovalev as well as being a MW.

In recent years his best win was Pascal, who IMO really isn't all that - his only achievement of real note was beating the most lacklustre version of Dawson we'd seen until last week (and even then Pascal may have been slightly fortunate that he butted Dawson before he, himself, gassed completely).

Then what? A loss to Chad and victories over Cloud, Murat and Shumenov, not one of whom deserved to be there, having all lost to Campillo (in an alternate and fairer universe) and none of whom I would consider close to Kovalev in terms of ability.

So yeah. For me, Kovalev is one of the biggest threats Hopkins has faced at LHW. I'm not imagining any kind of easy fight either of them, and I can see several weaknesses in Kovalevs game which I'm sure Hopkins will try to exploit, but overall I remain fairly confident of a Kovalev win. Bets on a dirty, dirty, fight from Hopkins though - he's gonna need every veteran trick in his considerable repertoire to pull this one off IMO.

Kovalev is the favorite. Question is if B-Hop can actually give Kovalev a fight.
The last guy that had outboxed Cloud, Shumenov and Murat didn't last 3 full rounds.

If Hopkin doesnt try to foul/cry/*****/cheat/dive out the ring his way out the fight, then yeah, he's a real threat, and this is intriguing as hell
