Most people on here that are arguing have never even bothered to watch more than a few minutes of old school footage before formulating their opinion.

There is a WEALTH of knowledge to be gained from watching people from the past.

Hopkins knows this, and he is considered to be perhaps the craftiest fighter today...

Look at that piece of **** fight that was on the undercard of Martinez vs Macklin.

That **** should have stayed its ass on Wednesday night fights.

That was just bad matchmaking on HBO, what are you saying the SMW suck in general?

I think it's much easier to argue that some of the past greats look poor on film, especially pre-1930's, and we choose to ignore all the faults of the previous generations while putting the current one under a microscope. Everyone seems to agree that there were a lot more tough guys in the past in general, a byproduct of more fights and less money. Fighters are earning more today and health is better protected, even if we wanted to go back to them fighting 100-200x they wouldn't be willing or allowed to do so.

The modern day fighters in the lower weight classes could hang with the old-school fighters I reckon. However, the heavyweights today, are for the most part, shocking. How anyone honestly believes they're better than 70's or 90's era heavyweights just defies belief. The heavyweights today can't fight on the inside at all, and can only execute 2-3 types of punches. Not to mention they often turn up out of shape, and struggle to last 12 rounds. So much for advanced nutrition and scientific training methods. Boxing is a skill sport, not a strength/bodybuilding sport.

I suggest you watch Demspey vs Carpentier.

Carpentier fights like Martinez, but he has more tricks.

That's not Dempsey's best fight, due to styles, but watch him against big men. He murdered them.

Most of the people who voted "YES" did so simply because they have some axe to grind with who the current HW champs are.

Look, this **** was obviously started by a big Wlad fan.

The situation with Wlad is I remember when he had a lot of hype regarding his career, but that all got derailed by Corrie Sanders, and that's what people tend to remember.

But the reality is that Wlad has turned in to an excellent fighter.

He is one of the best fighters in boxing at controlling range. There isn't any fighter right now that can seem to get inside his range, and there may not be one for a while.

His footwork is tremendous, and he has an excellent jab, and he has KO power in both hands.

Wlad can be beat, but you got to get inside his jab and make it an ugly fight. Guys who excelled in this style are guys like Tyson, and Dempsey who had an aggressive defensive style, and packed a considerable punch in both hands.

The problem is, those guys are rare, so a guy like this current version Wlad could be very dominant for a stretch of time, and will only get beat great fighters or guys with tremendous heart and ability to take punishment and who are fighting the fight of their lives.

I can admit that. How greats would match up with him. That's all speculation because a case could be made for any of them, but there very well could be some stylistic advantages and disadvantages, but I do not know.

    Speculation.

    But one speculation is this...

Mayweather may very well try to Wlad Klitschko Cotto who he may expect to play the roll of Haye.

I'll put it like this though, nothing that Klitsckho, Mayweather, Cotto, Pacquaio, does now, is anything that hasn't been done before.

to me alotta divisions arent near as exciting. but the heavyweights stand out quite glaringly. Even the welterweights arent near as good as they once were(as a whole). but not much you can do about it. you watch the fighters you enjoy

Yes fighters from past eras were clear as day simply superior IN GENERAL. Examples if a past their primes Lewis beat a prime Vitali who in today's era can't even be touched and an ancient Foreman kod a talented HW in his prime Moore how in the hell would todays fighters deal with them in their primes?! They can't!!! Even Floyd had one of his toughest fights with a past his prime Oscar which Floyd Sr wasn't sure who won when asked immediately after the fight and p4p king Pacquiao in his "improved" form still couldn't get rid of his old demon Dinamita Marquez a fighter clearly past his prime how they going to beat them if these fighters from an era before them were in their primes? Fighters were simply better not just braver back then. If anything talent pool was actually better with better trainers. The lack of great trainers is part of the problem and the true answer to all this. There isn't a fighter today with maybe Calzaghe that has Sal Sanchez stamina. Leonard took on Duran his version of Pacman Floyd has a ***** attack when Merchant is about to ask him on Pacman. It ain't no nostalgia lovin its the damn truth.

Boxing fans complain more about the state of their sport than any other fans. A large chunk of it is understandable with the trickle down nature of the polotics invoved that manifests itself in visceral outrages such as judging inconsistencies and alphabet soup titles. However; Overanaylzing minutia such as the respective effeciencies, or lack their of between era's can spoil the experience and drive away new fans.
