Jet Magazine Article on that fight.

    Part I

'New York Puts The Hex On Clay's Quip'

Cassius Marcellus Clay had the Gotham-Jinx close in on him for the third time
in his recent fight against rugged Doug Jones.

In his previous New York City fights, Clay pranced into embarrassment.
Early in 1962 Clay was decked by Sonny Banks before he stopped Banks in
the fourth round, and last May Clay predicted Billy Daniels would fall in five.

Cassius Clay won the tilt when Daniels was cut at the end of the 6th round, but
he never hit the canvas. Clay was able to keep his 18-bout winning slate clean
in his sell-out Madison Square Garden tilt against Jones, but his prophetic qualities
were greatly dulled when Jones didn't hit the 'Floor in Four' as predicted by
    'The Louisville Lip'.

In fact, Jones was on his feet the entire 10 rounds, and came close to flattening
Clay. Although Clay won an unanimous, though unpopular decision, he ackowledged
Doug Jones talent. After the fight, Clay chirped: "To tell the truth, I didn't think any
boxer could go 10 rounds with me. Jones is the toughest fighter in the ring - next to me.'

In the Gotham Brawl, Clay took as much - as he gave.

I scored it 6-4 for Ali. Many who saw the fight live felt Jones won. I would say it was very close. I do not think a draw would be controversial.

Ali had issues with quick jabs thought his career. Jones, Norton3x, and Young...

:D Yes it has been mentioned quite a bit on this forum, has n't it ?

It was a very close victory to Ali,imo. No closer, though, than the first George Foreman-Gregorio Peralta or Joe Frazier-Oscar Bonavena bouts.

I think Sonny Liston's review of the fight was correct.

Cassius Clay was unimpressive, but he eaked out the win.

It did prove one thing, it showed the formula to compete with
    Cassius Clay,,,,,,

Stay in tight, and fire quick straight punches.

If you stayed on the outside, he would pick you apart. And big looping power punches were ineffective against him.

And thank you all for the 'complemento'...:good

The fight overview by Huston Horn,,,,,,sportswriter

"A Cumuppance For The Cocksure Clay'

Cassius Clay was roundly jeered last night, after his shaky win over Doug Jones.

18,372 fans walked away from Madison Square Garden disappointed last night,
with the poor performance of Cassius Clay, and the questionable decision victory
he was awarded over Doug Jones. Very few in attendance were impressed, and most
left questioning whether or not the judges were blind.

Clay's performance in the early rounds was unimpressive to say the least, and
he was clearly lack-lustre in the middle rounds after failing on his prediction of stopping Doug Jones in the 4th round.

It appeared, in this reporter's view, that Doug Jones had a comfortable lead after
a good 7th round. But, Clay did comeback after that, and his rally in the last rounds saved him from defeat.

After the fight Doug Jones said, 'I can't think of anything Clay did good. He was the
    worst fighter I ever fought.'

Jones was also not too happy with the judges stating that, 'they were completely
out to lunch'. After the 7th round, both judges had Clay behind, and the crowd
roared after Jones rocked him. Every punch that Jones landed, was followed
by loud cheers from the New York fans.

But beginning in the 8th round, Clay realizing he was behind did fight harder.
Jones had tired a bit, but was still pressing. After the decision was announced,
ranting calls of 'Fix' rocked the Garden. Clay was roundly jeered by the sell-out
    arena.

While calls for an immediate re-match were tossed out, it appears that the young
Cassius Clay will head over to Europe, with a possible fight with former Champion
    Ingemar Johansson.

A rematch would have resulted in a clearcut Clay/Ali victory. Jones had peaked while Ali was still improving.

I had it 6-4 for Ali.

A really tight fight, but I'd agree with the article: Ali pulled it out by sweeping the last 3 rounds on my card, which he needed to do to get the W for me.

I watched it years ago and thought Ali won clearly 6-3-1. I didn't see the big controversy about it.

A fight in which I did think Ali got a complete gift, yet many others seem to think was fair, was the Shavers fight. I even read an interview where Shavers said that Ali deserved the decision. Then I watch the fight and can't see how on earth Ali deserved the decision.

Scoring round by round, I had Ali retaining his title, but I can see how you thought it was tighter than the Jones fight.

Shavers landed the harder shots throughout, and besides the end of the 15th where he was a couple punches away from being stopped, it was him making the late charge, not Ali.
