No, it's voluntarily, and it has great benefits for self-defense and health, fighters just have to be smart about their careers the longer they go so they don't end up with too much damage.

What you should tell them is that they are ignorant in the most literal sense about the sport of boxing. It has nothing to do with brutality. Boxing is all about athleticism and sportsmanship. The days of intentionally hurting your opponent are long gone in the arena of true sportsmanship. Referees and boxing commissions make sure that the fights are stopped before someone gets seriously injured.

What most people don't realize is that most of the professional boxers we see in the ring know and respect one another. This is a sport, yes, but it is a business as well. Professional boxers, as much as possible, try to look out for their opponents in the ring. That is why you usually see them embrace at the end of a fight. It is about respect and competition.

Boxing is much less brutal than football now. If the people you speak to don't realize this, they're just not being honest with themselves. There are instances where football players in this era die due to excessive heat and fatigue in training camp.

    Yeah...it's not brutal!!:patsch

Are those the same officials who attended Meldrick Taylor's and Terry Norris fights ?

Have you heard them speak lately ?

Somebody must have botched their job.

From an injury standpoint, at least in the amateurs anyway, boxing is one of the safer sports out there. Think about it: you have headgear, a mouth piece, your opponent is wearing gloves...In fact, it has been proven, statistically that the sport that produces the most head injuries to kids is rollerblading. No ****. Boxing is WAY down the list in terms of getting injuries on the amateur level.
