This content is protected His record is highly misleading and I feel that if he had a much, much better manager and team I feel he could have gone places, became a bigger star with his unique fighting style. His fan friendly style along with old school skills and circus acts would have had people wanting to watch his fights. Sadly that wasn't to be. Don't know if we'll have another fighter as unique as the Drunken Master. Would be nice if there was a movie based on him as well, much like the Fighter. And played by Donald Glover.
lol at glover Agree he wasn't handled correctly. What's more said is he didn't make much during his career and he recently got shot in the head. Sad there's no boxing Union or something to help this warrior. Side note, that shooting is suspicious. A huge portion of these "caught in the crossfire shootings" are more than meets the eye.
He frequently seemed like having fun in the ring was more important to him than actually winning the fight. His crowd pleasing style got him on TV a bunch. One of the most enjoyable boxers to watch. Not sure how far he could have made it if he was more dedicated to picking up the wins.
Every era is full of guys like him. Tough, crafty, durable among other things but have factors like their own inconsistency, not popular with the judges as well being the B-side in every fight going against them. Sure..... If the proper scenario(s) came about and everything aligned (ALA Glen Johnson) he might have done a lot more.
No, he never had the backing by a big promoter to match him so he looks awesome or get him big fights like King did Tyson and Roy or Arum did for Oscar and Floyd. Money behind a fighter is what determines his success and career. Augustus was a rare one of a kind fighter that was left out of the circle when it came to the big time. There are 100 guys in a gym right now that would beat the **** outta Floyd, Gennady, and Canelo this Saturday if they got the chance. Augustus is one of those guys who could give any fighter a hard night but without someone to grease the palms of the underworld in boxing he never stood a chance.
I don't think he was ever more than a fringe contender to be honest, he was tough but he just couldn't get past that hump into relevancy if that makes sense.... so I don't think he was a wasted talent at all.
