I don't think hopkins intensions are to be the light heavyweight champ, he just wants to fight named apponents to add to his legacy and pocket. But I can't blame him at his age I think all of us would do the same thing. But to answer the question I would say dawson the way he took the belt from whats his name.

Hopkins is the linear light-heavyweight champion. Its a matter of opinion if you think he's the best.

We will see after Diaconu. Even if he wins he need to prove himself aganist someone else from the top.
If he beat anyone from bellow list I can consider him the best LHW at the current time:
    Briggs
    Erdei
    Woods
    Johnson
    Tarver
    Jones
    Hopkins

    just one name above.

Yep, thats pretty much it - they are selective in their chosing. I don't blame them, when they are in the twillight of their careers, but I won't hail it either.

I thought that there is a basic difference between "linear champion" and "ring champion".
At the beginning they should be the same, but later ....

To be linear you should beat the guy who kept the title before but who is not necessery the best at the current time.

To be the ring champion you should be considered the best ... that was my thought ... but you are saying it isn't.

So if Hopkins did not beat a true champion (linear champion) and he is not the best one then what is the "ring belt" ...
is "ring champion" just the most popular one or most famous one or maybe the one who brings the most money?

Exactly. Best doesn't mean necessarily champion.

Hopkins is the champ. You dont lose your belt after a fight like he did against Winky. He beat the champion at the time in Tarver. So now he is the champion. Its not that difficult.

Exactly. He beat the champion and has not been beaten in the ring himself. He's still the champion. Everything else is a matter of opinion.

Of course not, Hopkins is actually a curse for the LHW division. He isn't lineal, he doesn't wear a legit belt and would lose to a dozer other LHWs right now in my books. Him owning the Ring belt just shows how worthless and biased the Ring ratings are.

Roy Jones was the Ring Champ. He dominated the division for years, and deserved the Championship. Then he lost to Tarver, who lost the title to Glen Johnson, then Tarver took it back.

Hopkins clearly "beat the man who beat the man".

Until Hopkins retires, or loses, he's still the Champ.

Johnson and Tarver gave up a belt to fight each other, because they understood how meaningless the alphabet soup crooks really were.

Only The Ring is even trying to fix the mess that is boxing. I don't understand how people can oppose that. Nor do I understand people who give any credit to the alphabet crooks.
