...after looking at tapes, why oldsters wax poetic over Robinson 'n Marciano? Are we hopelessly Stone Age?
Exactly put those fighters in this era they'll get they ass beat something vicious by gate keepers, oldtimers don't seem to understand that every sport evolves, not to mention the technological advances as far as gym and workout equipment goes
Understand the logic, s...'n heard it applied to Jesse Owens in the '36 Olympics. Be interested to see how many current fans disagree, and their reasons.
marciano would probably campaign at cw today and would clean the division out. he would also do just fine against many of hw's who have been "belt holders" over the past 5-7 years. marciano gets worshipped like an idol by some but he also gets horribly underrated by others just b/c he fought when he did.
Jesse Owens could still win Gold Medals against todays athletes. Maybe not as much as he did but he would win quite a few.
If you say so, I guess you think Ali can beat both of the Kiltschko's with one hand ties behind his back too huh..............
Dempsey would beat the **** outta Wlad. No doubt in my mind. Wlad has never seen anything REMOTELY close to Dempsey stylistically and in his ability to deliver punches. Wlad does not have the intagibles necessary to deal with that sort of beast. His low, slipping, rolling, fleet footed style would be WAY too much for Wlad and be the ultimate stylistic nightmare that Wlad could face outside of Mike Tyson. And when I speak of intagibles, I mean the will of a true fighter. There is no way Wlad has even an 1/8 of the heart that Williard had when his 6'7'' 240 lb ass got the beating of a lifetime. Point is: Dempsey is from 1920!
the ranking and the praise that robinson gets is justified. he was a great fighter. tough mother ****er as well. marciano was another tough fighter. didn't have much in the way of skills, but he brought it every time. can be overrated by many, though.
Floyd Mayweather is arguably the best boxer in the sport and one of the greatest of all time, yet he doesn't say he wins fights based on his athleticism which is what your entire post revolves around, yet you have the audacity to assume that athleticism is the only necessary attribute to become a great fighter. What about all the other intangibles like ring generalship and especially IQ, toughness like we've never seen today, and likes of which isn't even allowed, a much shorter rest time between fights, and the fact that there is a huge line of contenders that actually can FIGHT, waitin to beat your ass. There is no Povetkin stayin in the background or a Haye that has all the attributes, but when the spotlight was on him, ran like a coward.
That's bull**** too. Marciano had some great skills. He used some moves back then that are FORGOTTEN today. People need to realize that boxing is a MENTAL sport and not only physical.
i'm a dempsey man myself... but he'd be far too small for the likes of the klitschkos. he'd get knocked out. the style of dempsey would be to the liking of wlad. after a fast start, wlad would slow him down with his size. and when that happens, it's game over.
