I've seen a lot polls and have heard a lot of opinions saying robinson is the greatest ever at 160. the ap named him the best middleweight of the century and while that's great, i find him a bit overrated at that weight. at 147, i think he beats anyone but i feel fighters like greb, monzon, hagler, and even hopkins did more at 160. i might rate burley and holman williams ahead of robinson at 160 as well. thoughts?
The thing with the middleweight Robinson was that he was inconsistent. He had flashes of brilliance and mediocrity as well... He definitely got enough business done at middle to be ranked as one of the greatest, but in a H2H scenario, he's beatable. I think the Robinson from the last LaMotta fight was the best we saw of him at the weight, and that version beats just about every other middle in history, barring Greb, Hagler, and Monzon, if you wanted to agrue the point. I still think he beats those guys for various reasons. In terms of greatness, he belongs in the top 5.
SRR was all that's ever been said of him...the p4p stuff..but as a middleweight, i've always thought that Carlos Monzon would have been his cup of hemlock.
Maybe, Turpin seemed close to having Ray's number with his style and strength. Still, even though some make excuses for it, the two fights Carlos had with old man Griffith give me pause. Especially in their second go Emile, while way slowed down, was able to pin point right hand leads to Carlos noggin and make it a tight fight. Robby on a good night threw blistering right hands down the pike and far faster then the ones Emile hit home with. If they had two bouts I'd give each a win clearly.
No No No, he fought well past his prime at middleweight coming back after a retirment and fought middleweights while only weighing 142lbs. But at his best from 1950-1952 he was a class above both Hagler and Monzon at the weight
I wouldn't rate him the greatest middle but some of his achievements tend to get overlooked due to the number of losses he had at the end of his career. During his middleweight peak, around the time he won the title, he was dominant aside from the loss to Turpin which he avenged. He was a factor in the division from the early 40's to the early 60's.
Robinson lost too many fights at the weight (past his best I have to say) but he also won a lot of fights vs the men that beat him.... he regained the title 4 times which had never been done but he also lost it 4 or 5 times, he was inconsistent so its hard to say he had a better MW career than Monzon, Hagler or Hopkins but at Robinsons MW best like he was vs Lamotta, I think he beats all of those guys at on their own best days, personally.
Robinson dominated his division until he retired, only after a 3year lay off was he no longer dominant
