I mean, we all have John Tate winning over Weaver, right?

    Losers make excuses.

    Winners adjust.

    It has always been so.

Maxim adjusted to the heat. Robinson’s supporters make excuses.

do you give the chess grandmaster credit for a successful game, because his opponent had a heart attack?

Maxim won, and that’s the great thing about sports …

Yes. To finish first, you must first finish. As in 15 rounds. It’s like the race driver who leads 199 laps of the Indy 500 and his car blows an engine on the backstretch of lap 200. You don’t get the big trophy for dominating the race or having more style points. You get it for crossing the finish line first on the 200th lap.

I credit Maxin with having won the fight, no question.

I give him credit for his conditioning and his tolerance to the 104-degree heat. Maxim was 1 of 3 men in the ring at the first bell, the other 2 could not last, with the ref being replaced in round 10 and SRR unable to come out for the 14th.

The win doesn't elevate his standing significantly by my eye. He was well behind on the cards when the 157.5lbs SRR, who was a WW at his absolute peak, retired with heat exhaustion. It certainly isn't an ATG LHW win, not by a long shot.

I give credit to any fighter if they legitimately win, and Maxim won legitimately.

Robinson had the beating of Maxim over 10 rounds, but this was a 15 round bout and Maxim coped with the arduous environment better than Robinson, so credit is given to Maxim.

Yes he was behind on points but though I dont watch old fights much I have watched this. Robinson slowed down but the heat was the same for all 3 men in the ring that night. The only one not to collapse was Maxim. BUT he did land a few good shots. Not his best night against a lighter man but not his worst. He had a few against Archie Moore. But still didn't get stopped. Must have been a hell of a boxer. Probably Robinson's toughest opponent.

Yes, because both fighters had to contend with the same conditions.

It seems there's a completely fake mutual exclusivity idea that is rampaging through the comments section in the worst and most silly way possible. Well, maybe not worst but it's bad.

Alright, man. Let's do this. What is going on in this thread is the worst thing since General Weyler's Reconcentracion Policy. For boxing.

From memory Maxim just scraped into my top 20 at LHW, which is no mean feat given I only consider fights contested at LHW (or just over for non title fights) and over half of Joey's fights were contested at HW, iirc.

I think SRR's standing should actually be marginally enhanced by this fight. It shouldn't be considered a win, he lost fair and square. But he was outweighed by 16lbs, with that difference probably naturally nearer to 25lbs at their respective peaks, against a borderline ATG LHW, yet was well ahead on all 3 cards when heat exhaustion finished him.
