do you give Joey Maxim credit for stopping Ray Robinson

It seems there's a completely fake mutual exclusivity idea that is rampaging through the comments section in the worst and most silly way possible. Well, maybe not worst but it's bad.

It's either the worst and most silly way possible or it's not bad at all, Boxed. There is no middle ground. Pick one!

Alright, man. Let's do this. What is going on in this thread is the worst thing since General Weyler's Reconcentracion Policy. For boxing.

Worse than the case of mistaken identity that convinced Montezuma that Hernan Cortez's disease-bearing group of traveling peddlers were returning gods.

    For all sports.

From memory Maxim just scraped into my top 20 at LHW, which is no mean feat given I only consider fights contested at LHW (or just over for non title fights) and over half of Joey's fights were contested at HW, iirc.

I think SRR's standing should actually be marginally enhanced by this fight. It shouldn't be considered a win, he lost fair and square. But he was outweighed by 16lbs, with that difference probably naturally nearer to 25lbs at their respective peaks, against a borderline ATG LHW, yet was well ahead on all 3 cards when heat exhaustion finished him.

Maybe SRR had just maxed out fighting a LHW... & Maxim just out hustled him that night? Regardless of whether Robinson was ahead Maxim out lasted him under those same conditions & he deserves credit for it.. attrition & will are as much a part of boxing too.. Maxim was a good fighter but he generally lost to all the main players at LHW such as Charles, Moore, Walcott etc.. ya he beat lesnevich but he was way past his best... i dont think Robinson would have been dominant at that weight.. which is why i prefer Greb, who excelled beating larger fighters.. I'll also add Maxim wasn't a big puncher either, so it wasn't like SRR was under the kosh against an explosive big hitter that night further adding to his predicament... SRR had simply had enough.. he was outweighed & probably a bit out of his depth despite his admirable effort.

Maxim's plan was solid and he's fighting with the same conditions as SRR,he lost the battle but won the war.

The difference is,chess was a game of outsmarting your opponent, boxing is similar to chess except you actually have to last and hurt your opponent's better.

Maxim didn't necessarily hurt SRR better, but he lasted and paced himself better with his strategy, strategy is a part of outsmarting so yeah, Maxim won.

And don't make it seem as if boxing wasn't a game that could depend with circumstances and coincidences too, Maxim wouldn't have won if it was average heat, yet we'll never know what happens if Maxim stepped up the pace greatly near the 10th round.

The idea a larger body is an asset when talking about potentially overheating says a lot about ignorance and arrogance found on this forum.

Didn't check, didn't challenge, just one jabroni says it and the flock follows.

I have told y'all before in the context of HWs, it's super clear your understanding of biology and physics is made up nonsense you read and made sense to you, nothing to do with truth. Case in ****ing point.

Tell me again how Joey being larger helped him dissipate heat.

It proved that Robinson was human after all and not a light heavyweight. Weight matters. Robinson was a blown up welter who was good enough to beat middleweights, but going all the way up to light heavyweight was just too much. How many times did he attempt to win a light heavyweight title or fight a top light heavyweight after that? He recognized that was not his weight. Maxim gets credit for beating a really fine fighter who could give anyone trouble at any weight, but one who was far beyond his best weight. If he couldn’t beat Maxim he sure wasn’t going to beat a Charles or a Moore. Kudos to him for giving it a shot though.

Maxim deserves credit. He let Robinson do all the work and tire himself out. All he had to do was stalk and hang in there.
I'm still shocked that Robinson, who always demanded everything on his terms, agreed to fight him in the sweltering heat.
He was in with a naturally bigger man and knew full well he was going to have to move constantly.
Yes it's true Maxim "didn't have an air conditioner in his corner", but all the stress was on Ray, (true nobody forced him to fight him, though all these factors lead to Robinson being unsuccesful).
It was too ambitious a move, against a bigger man, on a night where the heat was only going to make it worse for SRR since he was the guy that had to run and keep throwing punches to hold off the bigger man.

It can be argued that if this had taken place where the extreme heat was not a factor, Robinson would have won, but on the other hand Maxim may have done better himself? We'll never know.

It's telling that SRR never attempted another crack at Lt. Heavy. I think he did feel Maxim's shots and being in with a bigger man was too much.

All Maxim had to do was stalk and stand there. Robinson had to run like hell and keep throwing shots to hold off the larger man. So yes, the stress was more on Robinson. Of course, that's no fault of Maxim's, but that's just the way it is. I'm sure they were both feeling the heat, but it's no surprise that Robinson conked out first.
