No, the argument isn't a fallacy. I'm admitting that I don't hold it against Dempsey, in actual concrete terms, ie. where I rate them. Rightly or wrongly, I don't penalize him.

If I held it against Dempsey, I'd have Greb and/or certainly Tunney at the least (who beat Greb AND Dempsey) ranked above Dempsey.

There's little point in people strongly insisting that they "hold it against" Dempsey, (and ripping his resume vis-a-vis Greb's and Tunney's) when they show absolutely no indication that they've penalized Dempsey at all by concluding either Tunney or "Tunney and Greb" were better heavyweights of the era.

People will bang on about Greb's record or performances against Brennan, Miske, Gibbons favourably against Dempsey's, PLUS his win or wins against Tunney.... bang on about Firpo and Carpentier being bums who probably ducked Greb too ...... but when push comes to shove they won't stand up and rate Greb alongside Dempsey at heavyweight, despite all those arguments they've made.

Dempsey chose to do that. He made a ton of $. Good for him but sucks for all those contenders he didn' give a shot. Though Frazier had proven himself more than Dempsey he didn't chose his circumstances. Nor was he out as long. Not really apples to apples is it?

Frazier chose not to defend against a ranked contender for nearly 2 years.All I'm saying is no-one here gives him any grief for it.

Who says Wills is a top 20 all time heavyweight? That is just your opinion.

 

Your argument is basically that Greb can't be better than Dempsey because he didn't beat him. That is the fallacy and the reason he couldn't beat him is because Dempsey ducked him, and I believe that duck amongst others tarnishes Dempsey's record whilst never allowing us to see what Greb could have achieved at HW.

Keep trying to argue that Greb didn't deserve a fight wit Dempsey.
