Maybe from a lack of knowledge of the sport, or pure adulation of the fighter. Manny Pacquiao is a great fighter but he isnt doing anything that is unprecedented in the sport. Georges Carpentier competed in every weight class Sam Langforde fought from lightweight to heavyweight at a world class level Charley Burley fought from 147-175 against the best in the world Also Kid Gavilan fought from banatamweight to middleweight Lastly the guy Manny reminds me of the most is Jimmy McClarnin who also competed from flyweight-welterweight There have been great lefties like Pernell Whitaker, Vincente Saldivar, Marvin Hagler, Hector Camacho, Lew Tendler, Khaosai Galaxy, and I just cant see how they could vote him as the greatest lefty ever. Pernell Whitaker is a top ten pound for pound great fighter of all-time, Im sorry but there is no way Pacquiao ranks over Pernell Whitaker all-time ranking
I'm not qualified to answer that serious but I will say he's the most ferocious and athletic I've seen.
What the hell does 3/4 of your post have to do with the question? Were Burley, Gavilan, McClarnin, etc. southpaws? No. If you have Pernell in your all-time top 10, I think most people would say you're overrating him. Of course you're entitled to your opinion, but I've rarely seen him in the top 10. That said, I do have Pea rated ahead of him at the moment. If Pacquiao beats Mayweather convincingly, that might not be the case anymore.
Pernell doesn't belong in the top ten. In fact i'd see him right now in exactly the same clutch as Manny, 18-25. I'd probably have Whitaker higher, but it really is wait and see on Pacquiao now. I already rank him over Hagler.
He still has an argument for best lefty ever...I dont think he is quite there but there is an argument.
You should have did a public poll & I voted `NO`.... Whitaker is the best southpaw Ive seen with Hagler & Pacquiao in the running for 2nd.
If you actually read my post I was showing how his accomplishments are not unprecedented before the packtards start all that bolleywhoing about what he has done hasnt been done before......anyway I agree Manny defeats Floyd then he may rate higher
he has 4 lineal titles and beaten the best fighters of this era, plus tell me a fighter in history that has brung it in every fight from flyweight to welter and has been dominant. he doesn't outbox bigger opponents he goes and tries to knock them out, he definitely up there with the greatest the sport has ever seen.
I agree, he`s a one-off breed.... but there will be huge question marks hanging over his career if he retires without facing the Mayweather-Mosely winner.... It would actually be better for his career if he fights & loses to that winner than not fight them at all.... personal opinion of course.
Since Pacquiao has moved up from 130, his competition hasnt been all that great, David Diaz at 135, Hatton at 140 who Mayweather already ko'd, and a shell of DLH, Shopworn Cotto and the highly ordinary Clottey who never won a big fight. Ever Heard of Jimmy McClarnin....he fought from Flyweight to Welterweight and won the legit World title....Beat Barney Ross, Fidel Labarba at flyweight, retired the great Benny Leonard, Tony Canzoneri, etc and over 15 world champions not titlist.....Fought tougher competition Kid Gavilan fought from bantamweight-middleweight Sam Langforde from lightweight- heavyweight beating champs from Joe Gans and greats like Harry Wills and Joe Jeanette You guys act like he was fighting a murderers rowatsch
