You actually have to win the Ring belt...all the other ones are next to worthless nowadays. Just be a certain ethnicity or a bit of a draw and you can fight for trinkets for years.

I would never trust sanctioning belts and I never said I did. I don't have time at the moment to go over every specific inconsistency of the Ring's rewarding of championships. But as one example... the Ring filled their welterweight vacancy when Mayweather fought Guerrero: they had Mayweather as the number 1 contender, and Guerrero as the number 3 contender. As I mentioned, anything less than number 1 vs number 2 fighting to fill a vacancy should already be questioned, but just having Guerrero at number 3 at the time was off, and TBRB's ranking of him at 5 was fairer. So Mayweather should not be considered the welterweight champion that the Ring considers him!

No one who questions the legitimacy of the Ring championship is saying the sanctioning body titles are preferrable! Only that the Ring's policy is not strong enough and boxing deserves even better. And if the Ring crown undeserving champions they shouldn't be accepted, especially because the TBRB has proposed a better alternative.

After a bit of research I can confirm that all the fighters that the Ring regards as champions that the TBRB does not should definitely not be recognised as legitimate champions!

Wladimir Klitschko should not be considered the champion at heavy because he never fought his brother, who for so long has been the legitimate number 2. Yoan Pablo Hernandez may now be number 1 at cruiser, but beating Cunningham when he did should not have earned him the championship. That was before the TBRB was created, but the Ring removed Marco Huck from their number 1 ranking and gave Hernandez and Cunningham number 1 and 2 rankings that they hadn't earned. The Ring removed Huck when he scheduled a fight with Povetkin at heavy, but removing him from the rankings was shown to be a bad decision because Huck resumed fighting and campaigning at cruiser after that fight. Alvarez had not accomplished enough to be considered number 2 at junior middle before he fought Trout. The TBRB ranked him at number 4. Incidentally, Mayweather had not accomplished enough at junior middle before he fought Cotto to earn the junior middle championship, though beating Cotto clearly earned Mayweather the number 1 ranking, so he therefore would have to be involved in a subsequent fight to fill the junior middle vacancy. Mayweather should not be considered the welter champion because Guerrero definitely was not top 2 when Mayweather and Guerrero fought. The TBRB had Guerrero at number 5. Many seem to have accepted Danny Garcia as champion at junior welter, but he should not be. The TBRB had not yet been created, but the Ring allowing Garcia to be crowned champion after beating Khan was the beginning of the downward spiral of their championship. Because Lamont Peterson was the deserved number 1 at the time, that fight should have at best determined the number 1 ranking. That Alvarez, Mayweather, and Garcia are publicised as true champions by the Ring is what makes so many people suspect a bias towards Golden Boy fighters. Finally, Mikey Garcia had not accomplished enough to be considered number 2 at feather before he fought Salido. The TBRB ranked him at number 6.

Adonis Stevenson at light heavy, Andre Ward at super middle, Sergio Martinez at middle, Guillermo Rigondeaux at junior feather, and Akira Yaegashi at fly are the ONLY champions in boxing! The Ring magazine championship should be ignored!

The ring magazine champion is nearly almost the widely considerd CHAMP so yes I regard it very highly in comparrision to the other ones.

I thought Mayweather became ring champ after beating Mosley?

After Floyd retired the Ring title would be vacant and Margarito beat Cotto to become number 1 at 147 and with Cotto coming off a bad lose, Mosley would get the 2nd spot. Mayweather then comes back to beat Mosley.

Mayweather probably fell out of the rankings after retiring, so the Ring wouldn't have filled their welter championship when he fought Mosley.

Oh, of course Pacquiao was top 2 at the time anyway.

The Ring Magazine belt is the closest thing to the lineal belt. To earn it you must beat the Ring Magazine champion, or if the champion if Vacant, the #1 man must beat the #2 or #3 to earn the belt.

In almost all cases the Ring Magazine belt is the consensus #1 guy at fightnews, and ESPN, who use a panel to rank their fighters.

So yes, in an era of alphabet soup and politics, the Ring Magazine belt is
the gold standard, and one that cannot be taken away as long as the champion is active in the ring.

This is getting pretty annoying that almost all the other posts on this thread have completely ignored my researched and carefully articulated posts about the shortcomings of the Ring championship...

If the Ring champion is only the lineal or legitimate champion in "almost" all cases the Ring championship needs to be questioned! I was a huge advocate for the Ring championship when it was created in 2001, but they've now blown it and it's no longer close to the "gold standard".

I meant I thought Mosley vs Margarito was for the ring title.

Margarito beat Cotto which likely moved him up to number 1 and Mosley moved up to 2 after Cotto got stopped.

I have been a long time supporter and defender of Ring Belt and Ring Rankings.

But, this year has finally shown me that they have finally lost the plot, and are now no more credible than any other org, imo.

Ranking guys like Broner, Canelo and Guerrero as p4p fighters, when they did, and where they put them, was as transparent as it gets and reeked of bias.

Rings credibility is no more, imo.

I was balking at rating them above the alphabet soup before it was cool. :bart (long before they were purchased by Golden Boy, which really should've erased any remaining vestige of credibility then and there...)

I wish the Ring listed their past rankings like the TBRB does so we could easily find out! It probably would have been for the Ring title if the Ring had their current policy in place back then. But I know the Ring didn't crown a welter champion between when Mayweather retired and Mayweather-Guerrero.
