I think youre not understanding something here, Rua, Machida, Arona, Wand these guys are good even great. Jones is what you call the new generation fighter. Thats the whole point. Heres and example, Royce Gracie was great but BJ Penn would have killed him even back in 2001.
erm, im fairly cognoscent with the facts of the sport having followed it since its inception..the point i was makming is that everyone, or most everyone, is/was raving about shogun, and gave jones no chance....forrest griffin beat shogun..he has looked pretty beatable before, as well as lookijg pretty unbeatable..my point was that most of the posters (pre fight) in this thread seemed to view shogun as unbeatable mma legend...not the case, as events proved..... if you read my other posts in this very thread you will see that i gave shogun lots of credit for his achievemnts, but suggested if i HAD to make a choice i would take jones and suggested that win, lose or draw, jones was THE future of the ufc franchise.... jeez, not a bad statement for someone so naive about the sport nbow, is it...??
i picked jones but didnt expect him to win in such dominant, authorititave fashion....that said, when i saw the guys coming into the ring, rua lack of conditioning was immediately apprent and i became much more confident i had picked right....as the fight unfolded i was astonished at how dominant, destructive and unfazed jones was. he looked like he had just been for a jog after the fight... i expected jones to become the future at lhw, ufc poster boy etc..as so many have said, regardless of the decision, i just thought he had so much potential at age 23 that this fight was a win/win kinda gig for him....the sky is the limit if the kid stays focussed, humble and dedicated
I don't know why some people were using the Machida victory as a basis to say Shogun would beat Jones. Their styles are completely different. And I'll say that if the Shogun from last weekend fought Machida, instead of Jones, he would've won. Jones IS that good. And the 2 to 1 favorite was conservative IMO. The only thing I thought that may give Jones problems was leg kicks, because I had never seen anyone kick him there. But he showed that he kicks better than Shogun, as well as does everything else much better.
