Do you reckon a boxer can develop a Chin?

  1. I often hear people say that Amir Khan no longer has a "glass jaw" because he took punches from Maidana, but some people say that punch resistance is part of a fighter's makeup, and that even a strong guy can be KO'd. Then you have Lucian Bute. Lots of fans defend his punch resistance, but Andrade arguably exposed his Chin.

Do you reckon that fighters like Khan can develop a chin or is he destined to always have a "glass jaw"? :think

a good chin can not be developed. The shots that knocked out khan would still knock him out know.

Bute went down more due to pure exhaustion than anything else that really shouldn't be hard to grasp.

It all depends on a lot of factors really, as opposed to something as spurious and vague as a "chin". I mean tough old guys like Jack Dempsey and Archie Moore were blown out in a round or so, but managed to come back stronger (and with better "chin").

  7. There is no evidence of this whatsoever. None. He went down from punches. Andrade punched him on the Chin.

To awnser the origional question fighters can do things to improve punch resistance yes, working on neck muscles, and legs does help a little bit, IMO taking a punch is more mental or getting hit with a shot you didn't see than in a fighters actual make-up, Larry Merchant actually said it well once it has something to due with a refusal to yield when you consider the fact that the chin is one of only 2 places on the body you cant build muscle(the other is the balls) how some fighters can take thunderous head snapping shot and other's get floored by sloppy average punches it's kind of a mystery.

Moving up in weight can help chinny fighters but it doesn't mean they've got good chins just chins that are no longer made in a glass factory. In the case of someone like Lucy Bute he fights comfortably at 168 yet has been KO'd by a tired C level fighter in Andrade.

To a certian extent some people have more natural abillity to take a punch as well as give a punch than others. However both punching and the abillity to take a punch can be improved on. Stringthing Neck, core and leg musscals, good conditioning and hydration dose help.
