I begrudgingly respect him but no i dont think he should be considered an all time great. He isnt far off the mark but there are too many very good fighters getting labelled as greats when very good is not great and Ward would be of them.

So is Keith Thurman. Can he retire in three fights and be an all-timer, too?

His career isn't finished yet so it's impossible to tell.

Winning boxing matches is what being a great boxer is all about.

Boxing is a sport. Being great in a sport is obviously about winning. Being a great boxer is about winning boxing matches. Being a great tennis player is about winning tennis matches etc.

Do you really believe that Ward and Thurman are on the same level?

This has turned out to be a great thread, didn't think it'd be this close, literally 50/50.

So Keith Thurman is an all-time great? Undefeated. Unified two of the welterweight titles. Three or four wins short of Ward?

Deontay Wilder is undefeated. He has seven more wins than Ward. Nine wins short of tying Marciano. And he's younger than Ward. Is he an all-time great?

I don't think just winning is enough.

What all-time great fighter did Ward beat? Which one is Hall of Fame bound? Chad Dawson? Sullivan Barrera? Alexander Brand? Edwin Rodriquez? Allan Green? Sakio Bika? Arthur Abraham? Kessler?

What makes Ward a "great" fighter? In the last few years of his career, he mauled and hugged and fouled more than John Ruiz.

I respect his skills. I think he has accomplished a great deal. I believe his victories over Kovalev should be a loss and a DQ. Without the Kovalev wins his resume doesn't rise to the level of ATG status. I believe that his politicking, the way that he managed his career was shameful, and that lowers my estimation of him as a man. However, even though the super middleweight division is one of the youngest and least deep divisions in boxing, it's between him and Calzaghe who was the best there.

    It is?

You'd take Andre Ward over Super Middleweight Roy Jones? You'd take Ward over Super Middleweight James Toney? You'd take Ward over the Nigel Benn who nearly killed Gerald McClellan? You'd take Ward over the Super Middleweight Chris Eubank who nearly killed Michael Watson? You'd take Ward over Tommy Hearns?

You got all that from Ward outslapping Sakio Bika and Allan Green in Oakland?

    Couldn't disagree more.

He seemed to fight at the level of his opposition and that's why I have reservations about ATG status.

Andre was great but he never really outclassed any one in the way recent greats like Manny, RRJ and FMJ did. Andre's main strength is preparing and sticking to a fight plan. I didn't like the way he won over Kessler, Froch although they were clear point victories on my scorecard. I thought he lost the Kovalev I fight by a point. It's just one of those unbeaten streaks which focused too much on the W instead of asserting his dominance. I truly believe he was capable of much more.

    Definitely respect the man!

    ATG=ALL TIME GREAT

No,Ward is not in that category,HOF yes.

Modern age ATG's are just Floyd,Manny,Bernard,Roy,Wladimir

Term ATG is used way too often.

Ward needs to continue his career to have a shot being called ATG.

I'm not sure I understand what "an ATG' means... Does it mean "one of the ATGs"?
