Do you respect fighters who are not prepared to die in the ring?

This is something that has come up after Haye's performance against Wlad.

Even in the last few rounds when he knew he needed a KO, he simply didn't risk it for fear of taking a shot in return and getting KO'd.. I can't respect that. This is a guy who was getting 20 million quid and at the highest stage of all and simply didn't have that extra bit of desire that the Chico Corrales/Arturo Gatti/Micky Ward/ etc had.

I respect Ricky Hatton, he would rather have gotten KO'd than been beaten on points by Floyd or Pac. In fairness he only had one gear and one way of fighting but he got a hiding in the first round from Pacquiao and came out even more aggressively in the second round. That's why he is loved.

Barry McGuigan had that warrior heart. Carl Froch has it as we know. Danny Williams earned everones lasting respect for the Klitchko fight. Lennox Lewis had that instinct to fight til the end, even though many thought he didn't have it. He also showed it against Vitali.

I even respect the likes of Amir Khan. Prescott absolutely walloped him and destroyed him but he kept trying to get up and was willing to fight on. Look at Tyson when Douglas knocks him down.. he is out of it but instintively he has the heart, the warrior inside that takes over and MAKES HIM try as hard as he can to get up.. he couldn't even put his gumshield in his mouth and he was still trying to get up and fight.

David Haye did not have what those fighters had. He took his points loss and scrambled away with his 20 million, essentially laughing at everybody. He should not be mentioned in the same sentence as the great warriors i mentioned.. men who have more heart, guts and courage than David Haye will ever have.

I think there's a fine line between being brave and being stupid. Depends which side you fall... :think

The question in the thread TITLE - Yes of course I respect them. WHo the **** would seriously want to DIE in the ring rather than getting beat? This isn't ****ing Rocky.

The question in the OP - No I dont respect them not giving it their all in the fight of their lives. Do I respect Harrison for his performance vs Haye? NO :good Do I respect Haye for his performance against Wlad NO :good

Do I respect Vasquez for retiring on his stool in the first of the trilogy with Marquez YES :good

To be fair to Haye - he went out on his shield to Carl Thompson.

I think if he is nailed - and hurt - then instincts kick in.

But when your coasting along like that - its easier to just ride it out.

If Wlad had been really been able to put the heat on Haye - then Haye would have been forced to show us how deep he was willing to dig.

But it was just one of them boring 12 rounders - where nothing too dramatic happened.

I understand the point you're getting at it but it is a stupid thread title.

You're mixing up a fighter trying to and putting himself in a position to win a fight and certain styles. There's a common denominator between almost all the fighters you mentioned and that's them being pressure fighters or reckless brawlers.

P.S, i think you've been watching too many Rocky movies...:good

Anyman who steps in ring deserves respect. Latvian Journeymen who fall down in round 1 i muster up a teeny bit of respect.

As for the warriors who are willing to go out of ring and into a coffin. They are special fighters who are not willing to give an inch. It's madness but i can understand there warrior machismo won't allow them to step down. It's honorable but when it's all said and done there familes are the ones that suffer. The fans can pay homage and pay respects but they ain't ones who grieve day in day out and suffer the emotional burdens. I don't believe any fighter in the ring is thinking ''i'm one punch away from death'' more like ''Need to keep going, not long to go now''.

I respect there love and will to win but i have massive respect for all fighters.

Look at Ortiz recently a warrior against Berto but against Maidana was like a school bully getting paid his dues. Fighters can lose and earn respect very quickly.

I respect anyone who steps between the ropes & they do risk their lives & health every time they get in the ring

Dont know what the Lirva does for a living but if you're prepared to take the same level of risks professional boxers do then I respect that too

The Haye Klitschko was dissappointing on almost every level, even the Wlad fans were left unsatisfied that Haye wasnt destroyed & brutally kayoed. Having spent a lot of his career as a risk-taking gun slinger it was sad to see a below-par performance but thats the nature of the sport, for every over-hyped let down there is a cracking little fight just around the corner.

David can retire aged 31 with a healthy bank account and the good health to enjoy it, he didnt get the fairytale end to his career but very few do.

Ortiz showed heart but it wasn't nearly as much of a crisis as the Maidana fight. Maidana was continually pressurising him and it was relentless pressure and Ortiz broke down. Berto wasn't nearly as aggressive. Ortiz still has questions to answer regarding his heart and I fancy Mayweather to force the stoppage late by walking him down as he did to Judah before the low blow in the 9th which started the riot in the ring

Yeah get what you mean Livra.

I feel Ortiz would of walked through anything that night. It was like Cotto against Pac. Trying to prove a point after the Margarito fight where a small section slated him for ''quitting''.

I'd never ask any boxer to die trying, how dare i or anyone ask that of anyone else if were not that type of person but i demand a high level of effort. That's what the fans, the opponent, the team and the sport deserve.

No good if Eric Crumble dies in the ring......... he could knockout Muhammad Ali but to become Muhammad Ali he has to become Muhammad Ali.

    Haye was injured.

I don't not respect Haye as it takes bottle to go in a ring and risk your reputation and health infront of a huge audience. However, I would have a lot more respect if he had taken more chances and tried harder to win the fight. He was not winning that fight the way he was fighting. His only option was to become more wreckless in the last few rounds and force Wlad to make a mistake. In my opinion Haye would have been knocked out if he took that chance- but you still need to take it as it is the only possoible way he could have won- even if it was slim it was better than the non existent chance he gave himself by continuing to move out WLad's way.

Haye has also shown heart against Thompson and Fragommeni etc but his eavyweight career has been awful. He can boast all he wants about his "woirld title" but when 4 or 5 sanctioning bodies exist it deosn't mean much. Valuev was poor as well and he only scraped by him.

Good post. Haye showed heart in the Thompson fight. That should be acknowledged.
