He beat Corrie Sanders (younger version) who easily demolished Wlad.

    Respect? Definitely.

But he was a placeholder/caretaker type of Champion. I don't think he's viewed the same way we look at Sonny Liston or Jersey Joe Walcott. But it was a big win and one that will always been part of Heavyweight history.

A little harsh on Hearns he was a much better boxer then Rahman. Regarding the ts question Rahman definitely deserves respect he took on all comers has a great win over Lennox, plus he had skill a very good jab and serious power in his right hand he dropped prime Tua.

Rahman was a good fighter but far from an ATG.

His best fights IMO were against Corrie Sanders and David Tua and also the Maskeav fights where pretty entertaining

I agree beating Monte Barret for interim title is questionable, but i believe that was the belt Vitali gave up and went into retirement for his supposed back injury rather than face Rahman

What was Walcott in title fights? Or Frazier?

Yeah, I respect Rahman. He was in some very memorable fights as the winner ( Lewis and Sanders ) and as the loser ( Maskaev who knocked him out of the ring, and Lewis ). And of course he was fouled in a loss to Tua, and really beat him in the rematch.

If he were around today, Rhaman would be the best the USA has.

Didn't Walcott get 4 tries at the title before finally winning? And it's not like he held on to the title that long. I would say they are the same level as champs.

If you count the lineal title, then he is a one time champion, and probably lucky to be that.

If you place some value on that institution, that is the Whetabix Boxing Council, then he is a two time champion.

Even if you take the former view, he clearly wasn't a one trick pony!

Indeed, and he survived big punches that Wlad couldn't take. Vitali was also very hurt by Sanders and Rahman did what he couldn't and put Sanders down. This is what put him in position in the rankings to get the Lewis fight 2 fights later.

Walcott's body of work is better. (Ezzard Charles, Elmer Ray, Jimmy Bivins, Joey Maxim, Harold Johnson) + the record (at the time) of being the oldest man to win the Heavyweight Championship.
