I had to re-evaluate my outlook on feather-fisted fighters when I watched Leonard Dorin vs Paul Spadafora. This content is protected Pernell Whitaker was never known as a hard hitter, but he was a purist that got any real objective watcher's respect.
Paulie Malinaggi is another one, but he did have a few good wins over Lovemore Ndou, Jose Miguel Cotto, J. Diaz. Question: On the argument of "effective punching" I hear alot of fans will say- Yeah but he landed the harder shots. Now work with me here.. Say Rouund 1 Pillow Puncher lands 20 shots. Baby Taps. KingKong lands 9 bangers...BUT 6 were in the last 30 seconds. Isn't that 20 to 9? with Pillowman dominating the first two minutes plus? I'm not saying the 20 has to be better than the 9...but how can a score reverse what was done in 2plus minutes? It's like saying: Since You didnt land harder...I erased the idea you were winning. To me that is why boxing is the most subjective sport ever.
Not usually. But in boxing, if you’re entertaining, people will forgive you anything. Case in point, Joe Calzaghe.
This content is protected As a kid, I didn't know that Macho was considered a light hitter. But out of 88 fights, just 38 kos 43% average.
Willie Pep, Maxie Rosenbloom, Pernell Whitaker, Nicolino Locche, Tommy Loughran, Kid Gavilan, Miguel Canto, Joey Archer, Ivan Calderon, Sven Ottke, Jimmy Young, Joey Maxim, Billy Graham, and Willie Pastrano. This is fighting, not tag.
Then I don't want to see you bigging up those tender hand Hammer and Sickle guys like Usyk and Lomachenko. They can't crack either.
Of course. How am I gonna say that Billy Graham and his deep well of skill, acuity, moxie and toughness has no place in boxing on account of a lack of dynamite in his gloves? If anything, one might argue that pillow-punchers who are able to hang at the higher levels deserve special commendation for the qualities it takes to make it so far in such a brutal, ruthless sport without any kind of notable firepower.
Totally agree, and while I know its subjective. I hate people who use that power punches win rounds idea. In the case you used there, yes I personally score that 20-9 and a comfortable round to "pillowman". The sport is about hitting the most and not getting hit first and foremost. If you can hit them enough or hard enough to knock them out and not allow that to matter, then even better. But that doesn't mean you win rounds by landing 1 power punch to pillowmans 5 jabs in my eyes
In a way I respect them more, especially when they achieve success. They don't have a get out of jail free card if they're being beaten, they HAVE to survive by boxing ability and toughness.
