Yes of course, he got caught with a punch he never saw coming, ask Pacroid, Duran, Armstrong, Joe L, LL, WK, etc..
Paul Williams is not exactly a special fighter skillwise. Way open, limited defense, does not use his height at all. Unless he can change the way he fights, he can win fights spectacularly or lose one spectacularly. It is like playing a russian roulette with that kind of style.
I hope he does. His fights are always entertaining and there are some good fights for him out there at 154, or maybe even at 147.
Yes he will rebound from his loss to Sergio Martinez. Martinez is a pretty good boxer. With being ko'd in the second round. There is always going to be questions about his chin. I don't think he's going to be great. Without making some style changes. However short of being stopped I think he beats anyone at 154 and almost everyone at 160. If he starts to use his jab more and take advantage of the fact that he is 6′ 1″ with an 82″ reach.
Been saying that since everybody was hyping him up and putting him high on the P4P ranking. His style is prone to disaster. You expect him to win all of the time but it only takes a punch to derail it, even from a mediocre fighter who can bang.
He needs to stop bullshiting with boxing and but some dam muscle on and learn to box ! All that height can only get you so far until your your exposed.
I see PW, if he still continues to fight rebounding from KO to KO from the canvas. With all the physical advantages he has (height/reach) he still is unable to utilize these to full potential. He easily gets himself in harms way, without his knowing it.
I think he's got the talant and I'm glad most on here agree. He lost to an exceptional fighter whom he beat the first time around. He needs a new trainer to take it to the next level in my opinion as most on here have said. He has been with his current trainer from day one and the guy is like a farther figure so this may not happen but he can still do well. I read an interveiw with his trainer where he said that once you've been a good amature you don't need technique anymore, just fittness. I don't agree with that at all, I know he's achieved a lot more as a trainer than me but looking at ATG trainers they usually try and work on technique with every fighter.
Only way I can see Paul getting back is if he switches trainers, but he is 29 and with his chin gone I don't know if he has the mental makeup to do it. Peterson wasted Paul's potential by not teaching him the basics as a youngster.
You cannot teach Hearns. McCrory was taught the same stuff as Hearns and was never the same as Hearns. Hearns had this warrior mindset and perseverance. No one will ever fight like Hearns and be as great as Hearns in that way. Williams rebounding? The problem is now guys know he can be stopped and they will be aiming for his chin. It isn't that his chin is worse now, but just being knocked out means they will try and stop him and they probably will. They will take punches in order to land and that tactic eventually lands punches.
I'll be fascinated to he how he rebounds. I think a lot of people seem to think that he will auto develop his long range game more, due to getting knocked out, but I believe he's being trying to do that for a while, only unsuccessfully, so I cant see as he's going to come back a different fighter, and if he tries to change too much, will it take something away from what made him effective ? Williams kind of learned a harsh lesson, dont fight in the 1st round like you would in the 12th, cause in the first round your opponents reflexes are as responsive as there going to be, so extending yourself whilst he's more reactive with his counters, is not a good idea.
