bobo is the greatest fighter to come out of hawaii and i hold him very high. to me, i think he and pavlik look similar and had a similar strong arming stiff style of boxing.

i havent seen much of bobo olson but like pavlik he had trouble with certain great fighters and success with other great fighters.

would it be fair to say that they where similar?

I dont see to many to be honest mate.

They are both fairly basic in approach with solid fundamentals but I think they have fairly distinctive differences.

Bobo is quicker, tends to throw his shots in a tighter and less telegraphed fashion...He is very at home up close and in the clinch where his strength, body attack and that short left hook he has can be used to his advantage. I thought he was an alright counter puncher aswell.

Kelly is more a rangy stand up fighter, who uses fairly stock standard angles and positioning...Who basically prefers to throw bombs and 1-2's from the outside/mid range.

I think Olson is a better class of fighter, and definitely goes about his business differently to Kelly. There might be a couple of similarities there but I wouldnt go as far to say they were similar fighters.

I think losing to Moore and Robinson isnt quite comparable to losing to Martinez and old man Hops.

I don't see any similarity at all.

Pavlik is closer in style to someone like Gerald McClellan, a lanky puncher with glaring limitations and defensive weaknesses.

Bobo was probably more comparable to someone like Winky Wright (minus the southpaw stance), an aggressive, high-workrate technician with a tight defense.

Bobo never had trouble with boxers; in fact, he whupped some very classy ones in his career (ie: Kid Gavilan, Rocky Castellani, Joey Maxim). His only problem was vs. punches, and then only the very biggest of them (ie: Robinson, Moore).

Also, Bobo only just fell short of true greatness, whereas Pavlik never even came close.

thats very good insight, i can see they are very different now:think

i think i was more drawn to their physical appearances, both white, tall rangy and big middleweights.

They look somewhat similar, but that's about the extent of it.

Olson is just a plain better and far more experienced boxer though who did his best work in close, while Pavlik is fairly ineffective at short distance.

I could see more similarities between Olson and Pavlik conqueror Sergio Martinez to be honest.
