do you still consider Calzaghe vs Lacy an upset?

i remember it was a huge upset back in 06...at least here in the States

any other fights you thought were big upsets at the time, but looking back not so much??

please spare me Clay vs Liston, most ppl on this forum were not alive when thay fight would have been considerd a upset

the term upset inherently means a result that was not expected before the event. Thereby, the "upset" part can't change afterward.

It was a pretty big upset,...but what was so shocking was how one sided the fight was. Lacy was indeed impressive in his recent victories coming into this bout, and was touted as a mini Mike tyson...and he looked every bit the part in the ring before the bell. There was this air of menace about him and he looked so damned dangerous. It was shocking and very impressive how Calzaghe utterly dominated him...I doubt that I've ever seen so one sided a drubbing...an ownage.

It was a classic case of 20/20 hindsight in the years after the fight to say"oh, lacy was never any good",....well **** no,...not after that whipping he wasn't. Sure Calzaghe slapped, and thank God he did, otherwise he would have killed Jeff Lacy.

Well I was alive for Ali (Clay) / Liston & it was for me the biggest upset ever in boxing. Bearing in mind boxing was more high profle in those days.

the main reason some people thought lacy would win was -

    1. that joe had done nothing for 8 years except barely beat reid (or arguably lose to him), a possible loss against the only live man you fight is hardly an endorsement for being a threat
    2. joe had a title noone wanted or valued, so was tohught of as a joke not just abroad but in the UK, amongst anyone who had heard of him
    3. joe had almost always fought in protected cardiff with his ref awarding him fake stoppages for years on end, many of these fights were a completel joke to watch
    4. calzaghe was unknown in his own country (england), but known in his adopted country (wales), warranting barely a line or less of mention in UK newspapers, so its hardly suprising lacy and othersthought he was the equivalent of a WBF bum today.

Given those circumstances, it is small wonder people favoured lacy - often they were picking the guy they knew over the guy they didnt. Lacy at least had a recognised title, whereas Joe at 34 was only now about to fight for a recognised title (though by 2004 and afterwards the wbo title was gaining some backing of course).

LAcy had made some defences that were at least more valid than joes, being for a recognised title.

Its not hard to surmise Lacy might well win, despite looking sloppy but strong in the ring.

What was shocking was how bad lacy actually was. He was STOPPED by 40something roy jones, pretty shocking for a prime man..

anyone touting lacy a mini mike tyson needs to go back to specsavers.

We've had a lot of "new mike tyson"s over the years - nearly everyone was pap, and shared NOTHING with tysons abilities, it was justa cheap way to sell someone who had a muscular frame.....

and jeff didnt change the pattern.

I remember thinking Lacy would probably win but, honestly, I really hadn't seen much of him and was believing a lot of the hype.

I should have known better than to believe hype. But Calzaghe hadn't impressed me much, and I in 2006 I probably still hadn't got my head round the fact that the USA was no longer producing the superior pedigree of fighters that they did for about 100 years or more.

if you take someone unknown wth an unknown title today (eg some wbf title holder) and put them in the ring with a holder of one of the major titles, of course you'd except the major title holder to win.

even with 7 years of joes titleholding he was still insignificant compared to lacey, becasue lacy had simply done more, in a couple of years.

in real terms it was joes first title fight, whereas lacy had made a few defences.

No. Lacy was hyped. Calzaghe although cherry picking his competition and only fighting at home, was at least established.

I always quite strongly believed Calzaghe would win because I had watched quite a few of his fights and always thought he was very talented.

I hadn't seen much of Lacy but considering all the hype, I was completely unimpressed with what I saw from him. Thought he was slow and lacking skill, all he seemed to have was power.

From what I remember Calzaghe winning wasn't a huge upset. It was generally considered a fight which could go either way. What was a big shock to many (people who overestimated Lacy and underestimated Joe) was how uncompetitive the fight was.

Lacy was a banger who looked impressive overpowering other fighters with similar styles. I didn't follow Calzaghe, so I thought he'd be food for Lacy. Huge upset in my eyes.
