do you still consider Calzaghe vs Lacy an upset?

    this has to be trolling.

On one end of the spectrum we have HaroldGee who calls Joe "Cowardzaghe" then we have this nonsense- both at the extreme of the non-objective to objective scale.

    Hilarious stuff.

Never once thought of it as an upset, i picked Joe to win, and tbf he handed Lacy his butt to him.

Also, dont forget Joe had around 40 odd fights at the time whereas Lacy only had about 20.

I thought it was a huge upset, I thought Lacy would walk Calzaghe down.

logically an IBF titlist would be expected to walk down a largely non legit WBF titlist today, an equivalent to joes title worth for most of his reign. At face value, to someone who didnt value wbo at all, joe cowardzaghe had made not even one legit world level defence his whole career at that time.

I dont see why this is an issue.

As an American, I had seen previous televised bouts of Jeff Lacey in action, coming away with the feeling that he was a promising and willing fighter with a good left-hook. But I had never seen Joe Calzaghe fight at all before his bout with Lacey.

While watching the bout between Calzaghe and Lacey, it dawned on me that Lacey lacked the skills, especially when it came to slipping and blocking punches, to compete with good fighters. While having an unorthodox fighting style, Calzaghe knew what he was doing in the ring and gave Lacey an absolutely brutal beating. I cannot understand why Lacey's corner didn't try to get the bout stopped in order to prevent their charge from taking more punishment. After fighting Calzaghe, Lacey took several other bad beatings during his career. As a result, I thought he should have retired and go into another line of work not that long after he fought Calzaghe.

lets not undersell jeff, even though lacey was poor at world level, he was still world level, one of the two uninjured world level opponents joe faced in his 11 year stint.

I don't get this Calzaghe wasn't that well known and that Lacy was more established and had fought better men!
That clearly hadn't been the case but Lacy had knocked a few people out and consequently was overhyped although in fairness a lot of people on both sides of the Atlantic bought into that hype as though Calzaghe was facing some kind of monster.
Lacy was the favourite and some thought he was going to blow Calzaghe away others thought it would be close either way.
What was a shock was the total anahillation it turned out to be but in retrospect it simply emphasised the gulf between the two fighters as Lacy simply wasn't very good, plus his style was made for Calzaghe.

I went to the fight with some mates, and knew the only danger to Joe was Lacy's punching power. We all knew Calzaghe was faster and more skilful that Lacey, and he'd only lose if he got sloppy - which I'd never seen Calzaghe do ever since I'd watched him clean up in the ABAs as a kid.

While Lacey was a slight favourite with the UK bookies, it was by no means an upset.

i dont either...i remember reading about Calzaghe in Ring Mag as a young American lad way back on 1998. even then there was talk of him trying to get a fight with Roy Jones

most Americans did not think too much of Calzaghe back then, but those who followed boxing surely had heard of him and understood him to be near the top of the Euro 168 heap

by contrast, i did not start hearing of Lacy until around 2004 or so

This wasn't a fifty fifty fight at all. Almost everyone picked Lacy to win, in most cases via brutal stoppage.

A big upset at the time . But now as we look back , it wasn't much of an upset . Lacy was proven to be overhyped . Calzaghe was proven to be overrated .
