Just curious. I watch only the big fights now, and I haven't a clue about most of the modern guys. Boxing just doesn't seem as compelling nowadays as it used to be...
Sure do. Thig big fights, as you say, and most of the domestic stuff. I'm Scottish. I disagree that boxing is not as compelling now. If you missed Vasquez v Marquez II this year you missed one of the best fights in the sports history.
This irks me. Some historians or old time fight fans hardly watch modern boxing at all. The sport has not changed much. Every era has talent in it.
Sure, there are some great/exciting fighters especially in the lower weight divisions, Mayweather, Cotto, DLH, Pacquiao, Calzaghe, Kessler, Hopkins, Haye, etc etc. I like the excitement of not knowing who will win. Old times will always have special feelings attached, but old times once were "new", too.
I didn't mean it as some sort of derogatory/inflammatory thread. Naturally every era has it's ups and downs. I've just lost total contact with modern boxing. (I don't even know what fight McGrain is talking about.) :?
Track it down, it's probably on YouTube by now, but if not chase it like it's Greb Walker. It's up there - Robinson V LaMotta VI, Hagler-Hearns, whatever, this fight is a classic, alongside them. I'd argue that round 3 is amongst the most exciting rounds in the sports history. I think the problem is that dull decisions betweem middling fighters dissapear from history - whereas if you sit down to watch two local fighters on a Friday night, you may get just that. But you can seek selectively in retrospect and fight fights every bit as good as those of legend. Kastidis v Earl was another barnstormer frome earlier this year, though hard to watch. The fighters, the best fights, just as good now as always.
Will do. I think the last modern fight I watched was DLH-Mayweather. (I got my times mixed up for Hatton-Mayweather.)
I watch some of what's available in the UK, IF I think the fights are WORTH watching and if they are broadcast live. But sometimes, frankly, there are better things to do. Chasing down a Vasquez-Marquez is no different to seeking out a highly-recommended fight from 1972, IF you didn't see it live there's not much difference. There are some good fighters these days, but I'm totally out of touch too. Maybe it's just me, but I dont think boxers are what they were in the 1980s, there's a lot of guys hopping round divisions and not always fighting the best. And television coverage isn't what it used to be. Heavyweights aren't interesting. The heavyweight division is terrible, most of it isn't worth watching. I guess all the best fights must take place in the divisions below 140 or 135 pounds, and I'm out of touch, apart from knowing Pacquiao.
You know, I think that the fighters are there, but up until NOW, they've been struggling to make the fights. I think the division is not great, but the biggest problem is 4 champs. All been making money, all been ducking each other. If guys like Klit, Povetkin, Peter, Maskaev, Chagaev (a fighter I really quite like), Ibragimov, even Virchis and Thompson are decent fighters. But they need to fight each other and plenty.
david haye will explode into the heavyweight scene because he'll have stamina which is what all the talented heavys lack and there are talented heavys
If you did not see Brewster vs Lyachovich, Pavlik vs Taylor, or Kessler vs Calzaghe, you are missing out on some good stuff as all matches took place above 140 pounds. While TV coverage is more expensive than it used to be, modern fans have greater access to boxing thanks to the internet. Fans can read all they want on the internet, and view matches on the internet. Modern boxing greatest problem is not lack of talent, its organizational politcs, legal suits, tight fisted promoters.
Boxing coverage here has completely nose dived since the late 90's. Boxing here, aside from football, cricket and rugby, was probably the most covered sport in the 80's and 90's. Now it's barely ever shown. At heavyweight, the only fighter one gets to see is Klitschko. I have not seen one Valuev, Chagaev or Ibragimov fight on the TV. We're pretty much stuck with Mayweather fights, KOTV and maybe the ODD other big fight. Okay, there's the local stuff but that's not usually worth watching.
Many of Ibrgimov, Vlauev's and Chagaev's fights are shown in the USA. I suggest you try the internet you tube.com Go to youtubecom, and type in the fighters name. They you can see them in action. For daily news, I recomend fightnews.com, or boxing press.
