Do you think a title belt should be at stake for the PAC-Cotto fight?

Not entirely true. I remember very well when DLH fought BH... people on this board were talking against the catchweight.... not as much as they talk now, but they were talking none the less. The only reason why people didn't make a bigger deal at that time was because people knew very well that Nard was/is a gym rat, and he his always in shape.... and also the fact that he never had problems making weight....

Let me just add something else..... fighting for a title at a catweight has nothing to do with people (boxing fans) getting pissed off or not......... complaining or not........ it has to do more with money involved than anything else.... other boxers in the past put their title on the line at a catchweight because they probably thought that the money was right.... I believe that Nard thought that way.... the question here is: is Pac giving the right amount of money to Cotto for him to put his title on the line????

If you think that it is "UNFAIR" to Pacquiao, then don't you think that it is fair that you should think at least if it is fair for Cotto to put his title on the line for whatever $$$$ he is making for this fight????

I don't really know what kind of money Cotto is going to make for this fight, and I don't really care.... I am not a promoter, but maybe the answer is there.....

Money talks.... and if the price is right then you can get what you want. Maybe Pac or Arum or Roach or somebody else in Pac's camp is getting too greedy....

PS. I personally dislike this type of fights (catchweight fights involving titles), regardless of the boxers involved. NO DOUBLE STANDARDS HERE...

Judging from the news reports, the title will not be on the line because Cotto doesn't want to pay the WBO title sanctioning fee (which could range from $150K to $400K). I dunno if the sanctioning fee will be paid by Cotto only or shared with Pacquiao and/or the promoter.

It's rumored that PAC will get a guaranteed purse of $12M for this fight and it's also rumored that the split could be 65/35 in favor of Pacquiao. Using this rumored figures, it will result to Cotto having a $6.46M purse. I think this will be the biggest purse so far for Cotto.

The decision to have this fight as a title fight may boil down to money and it seems most of the involved parties (Cotto, PAC, TopRank) are not interested to pay the title sanctioning fee. They and the fans has various reasons why this should not be a title fight.

It's only WBO who I think is pushing this fight as a title fight. Is it possible that WBO will strip Cotto of the belt since Cotto is not willing to put it at stake in this PAC-Cotto fight??

    Like what I have repeatedly posted . . . I don't care . . . I just want to see the fight.

But asking me . . . do I think? Yes . . . it's inside the legitimate welter limit. The only problem here . . . is that nobody wants to pay the sanctioning fee.

I guess most people here has the same sentiments... They think/feel that the title belt should be on the line (it's just nice to have ;) ) but they doesn't care either if there's NO title at stake...

People just want to see this fight... That's all that matters...

Of course, Cotto is not stupid.... He thinks probably that he already gave up in the purse split..... I mean, if you were Cotto, would you be willing to pay the fees to put your title on the line...... I WOULDN'T

Why doesn't TOP RANK pay the fees and then the fight is for the title??? I guess they don't want to do that because they want another stupid (sucker) to pay for that..... right???

Why doesn't Pac pay the fees???? maybe he doesn't care about the title.... and if he doesn't care about the title, then why his fans should care???

Anyway, you just said it......it all boils down to money.... and I knew it as well as many other posters here knew it.... at the end of the day $$$$$ is what counts.....

Regarding your last question.... I am not sure if the WBO can strip Cotto of his title, I am not an expert on this...... however, Pac is not his mandatory, and if there is no title at all they can fight in Africa if they want to and donate the money if they want to and the WBO can't say nothing..... I think if there is not title on the line they don't need any of those organizations..... I MIGHT BE WRONG TOUGH.

PS. Wasn't Vargas who fought somebody with no title and without paying any fees????

This is really an odd situation where it's the boxing organization (WBO) pushing it as a title fight and the boxers/promoters involved not really interested for that title...

I think it's the boxing organization's responsibility to determine if a fight can be considered a title fight or not... WBO said it's a title fight, problem is nobody cares...:D

If worst comes to worst, I'm guessing WBO will strip Cotto of the title and will prohibit Cotto being addressed as the WBO Welterweight Champion...

Though to some boxers, titles are important... for example that recent news that Caballero willing to pay for all title sanctioning fees (for 3 belts!!) in order to get the JuanMa fight... JuanMa reportedly not willing to cough up for the fees...

As I said before, I am not an expert on this but if Pac isn't Cotto's mandatory, then he doesn't have to put his title on the line he doesn't want to. He doesn't even have to fight Pac at all if he doesn't want to....

I think Cotto could lose his title if he had a mando and instead of fighting his mando (defending his title) he decided to fight somebody else.... in this case fight Pac.....

There is no way that the WBO can say that Cotto has to fight or defend his title against Pac.....

This is what Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel, lawyer and president of the World Boxing Organization said:

“I know that Manny is looking to make boxing history. I can appreciate that as he goes after the very tough Cotto for a seventh weight division world title,” Valcarcel said.

“You can tell all the people right now, the WBO title will be on the line. You’ve got a highly respected champion fighting the Number One contender. It would be ridiculous for this not to be for the title.

“No matter what happens, I assure you that this will be a WBO welterweight title fight. End of story.”

The champion shouldn't lose his belt when unable to fully utilise the weight division IMO.

Fair weight to fight at - yes, perhaps even 2lbs too high but Pacman can't claim to be a WW champion of the world if he is unwilling to fight at 147lbs anymore than Cotto would be number 1 lb for lb by beating a heavier than normal Pacman.
