Do you think a title belt should be at stake for the PAC-Cotto fight?

Should be a belt, but if not, it does not matter that much.

 

Catchweight fights for title fights demean the belt IMO. Yes, I understand that if both fighters agree to it, and it's under the limit it may technically be able to be a title fight.

I just think - in any example of a catchweight fight, I don't care if it's Pac, Hopkins etc - that letting a guy have a catchweight fight for a title, shits on ALL of the other guys that are fighting their way to the top of the division on merit, and fighting other guys that will weigh in at 147.

Hell, if a guy wants to weigh in under limit just to prove a point (like Hopkins has in the past) fine, but to impose penalties or cancel a title fight, because the champion actually weighs what he's allowed to in his weight division is just ridiculous.

I agree with what you're saying about signing a contract to make weight. What I'm saying is that I disagree with title fights being held at catchweights within an existing weight class.

If Mayweather had a title at 147lbs but wasn't allowed to fight at that weight, were he to lose to Marquez I don't feel Marquez should be able to be WW champion either.

 

if they don't fight at the 147 pound limit there should be no title fight. I always remember that fight Ray Leonard had in 1988 with Lalonde. He actually had Lalonde, -who was WBC light heavyweight champ go down to 168 (7 pounds below his weight) and then they fought for two titles, the vacant WBC super middleweight title and the WBC light heavyweight title. Neither title should have been at stake, but Ray was trying to beat Tommy Hearns to 5 titles. As it turned out Hearns was going to fight Fully Obelmejias 3 days before, and Fully Obel pulled out with a rib injury two weeks before that fight, so Hearns fought Kinchen for the new WBO super middleweight title on that same date (I think Nov. 4, 1988) and won his 5th title 3 days before Leonard did.

 

I agree that it is ridiculous for the Light Heavy title to be fought for at 168lbs but what was the problem with the Super MiddleWeight title being fought for by a coming down to the weight? If you excuse my ignorance.

 

At the time only Ray could have accomplished that feat. He was fighting a weakened champion at 168 for the 175 pound title, and Lalonde was not ranked at 168. I don't think either title should have been at stake. Ray had that kind of clout to pull this off. It was amazing that he got away with such a joke. Lalonde was a decent champ, but not in Leonard's class.

 

So if the fight is gonna be at 147 then fighters should be between 141 and 147 on fight night!!!! that's the range right ? So why would COTTO BE ALLOWED TO WEIGH MORE THAN 147 come fight night? He should defend his TITLE within that range not rehydrating to 156-160. Obviously that's CHEATING! He's not a TRUE WELTERWEIGHT fighter after all! :hat
