Simple question: do you think the current drug testing in boxing (for arguments sake in the US) where a urine test is taken directly after the fight is sufficient enough for catching and deterring drugs cheats?

    Please discuss your vote below.

If anything I'd say it's excessive.

Doping testing in general, in every sport, is almost per definition insufficient because when a (new) drug can be detected, another (new) drug (or way to mask it) has already been developed.

Drug testing in boxing is nothing short of a sad joke.
It's miles behind most other sports, while it's much more important too because of the physical damage inflicted on the fighters.

The promoters & sanctioning bodies dont want to catch anyone so the current tests are perfect, even when the tests are positive the results are not disclosed & hushed up or the punishments are non-existent.

A pre-scheduled urine test is incredibly easy to beat if you know what youre doing, the testing in boxing is a joke. Maybe once someone is killed in the ring by an opponent who tests positive there might be some appetite for change, until then nothing will change because no-one important gives a ****.

A view that is held by some experts is that testing is general is nothing more than a show piece. This opinion goes that if people have the money and want to cheat then they can, and its near on impossible to stop them. However, drugs testing does a couple of things: it reassures the viewer (who know next to nothing about PEDS) that he athletes are clean and something is being done about doping, and it also creates the impression of a level playing field for athletes who are on the way up.

Sports could never turn round and say 'athletes can take what they want'. That just wouldn't work - for a start you can't have a sport that allows its competitors to take substances that are actually illegal, and you can't have children growing up knowing that if they want to emulate their idols then they have to take drugs.

We seem to constantly be seeing chaps get caught out when fighting in big World title fights so I reckon yes. At the lower level probably not.

It's better than it was, but still only scratching the surface of the issue.

Testing is one thing, but to me the bigger issue is that the punishments in place are no real deterrent. A no-contest and 6-12 month ban for someone who competes twice a year is pitiful, and does nothing to discourage PED use. A two year ban for 1st offence / lifetime ban for repeat needs to be implemented to have any real effect.

One could see why it had gotten to this point.

Jacked up fighters are likely to put on more "electrifying" shows, therefore pulling in more $$.

Like you'd said, what IS there is there to give casuals a false sense that something is being done.

It is no worse than a couple of years back when it was sufficient enough for Bob Arum & co.

suppose it may be picking up as we are starting to see more positive results..

i will say the punishments for it seems to be a joke when caught..

It is no good catching someone after a fight has taken place. The damage could have already been done in the ring. So they need to step up the mandatory drug testing procedures.

You also can't point the finger solely at the drug testing committees, the cheaters are always one step ahead with new methods to avoid positive results showing.

My answer, any fighter or coach caught cheating or providing illegal drugs gets a lifetime ban from boxing and any other sport. That deterrent alone may reduce the amount of cheats out there.
