I kinda wonder which of the following most common views on this topic is the case or if all of them are true to some degree: Some people argue he legitimately tried until he got a taste of that 168 power in the first 2-3 rounds and pretty much said 'I don't wanna feel that **** no more', then ran around the ring avoiding Canelo for the rest of the fight. Others argue he tried up until the knockdown in round 7 where he pretty much went into hiding for the remainder of the match and largely refused to engage Canelo even when in situations where it seemed like he knew Canelo was not in a position to return any serious fire. Then of course there are those who argue Charlo never even had it in his gameplan to fight Canelo. The whole plan from the very beginning was to run and avoid as much leather as he could. If he could survive 12 rounds to walk home with the bag, that was good enough of a victory for him. I can imagine Derrick James is ticked. Two huge fights this year involving undisputed vs undisputed and both lost. Spence had to be saved by his team because he wouldn't stop fighting whereas Charlo's team was beginning him to fight or do something other than run. He's not the only one ticked though. Aside from James, most boxers and fans who watched this fight are also ticked. I pretty much stopped watching it while it occurred live after seeing the first 5 rounds where Canelo won every.single.one. I did go back to watch the full fight the following day just to not write it off so easily but still, when does Canelo ever press the action and win the first 5 rounds of any fight against a guy who can stick and move? Well, atleast Canelo didn't suffer any extra wear and tear for this fight so he can be at 100% for whoever he fights next which is hopefully Benavidez.
I give him some benefit of the doubt. Canelo must have hurt him to the body early and that can have a big effect on both your physical capability and your resolve.
He's a typical slick. These like running when they can't bully or 'clown' or 'school' some lowly opponent. The pattern is seen quite a lot.
Charlo is all bark and no bite. I'm sure he convinced himself that he was taking it seriously but once he was sent backwards by a couple of early body shots he ran for the hills. Reality is that the guy is a massive talker but a bit of a coward.
It’s not that Charlo sucks It’s that he like Spence & Fulton Can’t live up to their amazing PBC hype. They get exposed when they face fighters outside of that camp who have been baptized by fire..
He never took the fight seriously; he let it slip that he took the fight to help take care of the Charlo family, which his brother had failed to do. It was clear to me at the weigh-in that he had not done any serious preparation.
i think he was convinced he was until he got punched in the face and remembered that he is an athlete trying to be a fighter rather than a fighter trying to be an athlete.
