When Cotto got destroyed by the cheating Margarito, he was never the same. Became more cautious and less confident. Do you think Haney post-Garcia will follow his example? and what is the best move for his career going forward?
Every fighter who loses is just one tattoo away from convincing themselves they're already even better than they were.
I think the manner in which he was beaten up will stick with him forever. When Haney can’t sleep his brain will go “here bro remember this “.
Maybe. It goes one of two ways... He either takes it on board, works harder on defence and becomes harder to hit (including more hugging, more avoiding guys his own size wherever possible, making sure he's a clear A-side so hugging isn't punished, etc) and continues to have a very similar career for a while - or at least until he can't cut enough to fight at 140 anymore. Or... He becomes hesitant and easier to break down. Considering it doesn't take a change in tactics, the former is not unlikely - it just depends whether he can live with the increasing accusations of fraud that continuing in the same vein will bring.
I think the loss was more embarrassing and disappointing than it was physically destructive. Sure he went down a few times and maybe broke his jaw but I have seen much worse beatings and damage taken by young fighters. I don't think its anything that will harm him long term I think it is more likely the loss derails his confidence and self belief. Does it happen? I am in the wait and see department. The loss certainly showed some issues for him defensively and offensively. That said, Garcia also is extremely fast and athletic, can anyone in and around 140 replicate that same combination. Im not so sure of that
He needs to change, he was wide open to those hooks, he needs to improve his defense and develop power.
It all depends on how he reacts to get his chin checked again. Amir Khan comes to mind. He was beating everyone until he got caught and was never the same afterward. Want to see how Haney handles it when he gets caught again, and he well at 140 and above.
Idk, Ryan beat him up pretty badly. Hes always gonna be tough to beat since he can rack points up but he’s going to be terrified of power punchers now. Sandor Martin is a good match up for him.
He's young enough to so I see no reason why he can't come back and go for another world title in a few years. Needs to make a few adjustments like all fighters do when they suffer a loss.
Khan got KO’d while still a prospect, against a not highly ranked fighter who didn’t also come in heavy and pop for juice. There’s much more hope for Haney than that.
He took a bad beating in that fight and those types of beatings without a doubt can permanently destroy fighters careers. We will just have to wait and see how he looks going forward.
That and living with the fact that the boxing world will side with the potential drug cheat over him lol. Hate like that can hurt someone's confidence definitely
Depends if he takes the reason for the loss onboard and corrects the mistakes. Or if he blames everything else. Everyone who wants to face him in the division is practicing that quick left hook though.
