Do you think James Toney could have beaten Roy Jones?

If James was more dedicated and didn't have trouble with the weight do you think a sharper Toney could have troubled Jones at all? Do you think he had any chance at all against Jones? With all the skills Toney had its still hard to believe how RJJ was able to shut him down.

i think a sharp, barkley-fight type of toney could have snagged a round or two but i don't see him ever beating jones

That still doesn't get rid of Roy's mobility and punching cunningness, so no. He could've bag a rd or two but no more than that. Roy was a stylistic nightmare for him.

I think he could have won. James was a tough guy and a smart fighter. He just wasn't dedicated to staying in shape. If he was in top shape, he was in the class of Jones. He just didn't have Jones' speed or athletic ability. If he was dedicated he could have lucked out. We will never know what could have been, though.

By Nov. '94, Toney needed 175 pounds badly, if not 190..... Christ, Toney was reported to be 206 just 5 weeks before his date with Jones.....The Toney of '03 and 190 pounds for Jirov would be a live dog for the Jones who out-boxed Ruiz...... The 217 pound Toney who hammered Holy would eat Jones alive......

Toney's problem has always been movement and left hooks...Roy Jones specialties. In shape, he doesn't get embarrassed, but he also doesn't win more than 2 rounds. Just a horrible style match up for James.

Toney at his mythological best might be able to land a shot which levels Jones but he'd never in a million years outpoint Jones.

No, his feet would always leave him a few steps behind Jones.

Bad style match-up for James. Roy would find any version of James a fairly easy victory.

If Toney would have been able 2 com4tably make 168 then he would have landed crisp on Jones at some point in d fight and stopped him .

This is y Jones waited 4 Toney 2b unable 2 effectively make 168 and never agreed 2 fight him again .

Jones only fought nobodies , dead ppl or lost .
Tarver was older , more drained and more drug abused than Jones when Tarver stopped Jones , have no doubt about it .

At 175 I'd say it was possible. Griffin was able to hit Jones often in the first fight, I don't see why a Toney at that weight couldn't do the same but be obviously more effective.

Have you ever seen Toney at 175? He was ****ing terrible. Didn't really come back into his own until Jirov, at cruiser.

Why would Toney 'be obviously more effective' than Griffin?
