This. I don't see anybody being able to emulate his style while also being able to match his success. To top it off Calzaghe also had an excellent chin.

Yep. And when he did get dropped (Only a few times) he recuperated fast and got to work. There was things he did that you can’t teach.

I've not seen the links for a while now, but I know that from 2002-2003, Frank W and Jay Larkin were looking for the fight to be in Cardiff.

Frank W is on record stating that Showtime lost interest in Joe, as he wouldn't promote himself in the U.S.

Joe himself says that he had a fear of flying.

We've been discussing this for years.

Well Mitchell admitted the referee was probably right to stop the fight when he did,

"I thought it was stopped a little bit prematurely but the referee was looking out for my best interests,"

Mitchell retired at age of 30 following the bout, making a form of comeback 4 yrs later.

I think we might need to disagree about you thinking Calzaghe was saved by ref from getting koed.

The fight might have been stopped early, however the ref made a decision based on what he saw, we witnessed Mitchell at that juncture to be a human punchbag, staggering around etc, yes only 20 seconds left in round but if fight had been allowed to continue for those 20 seconds and god forbid Mitchell had been neurologically damaged or worse by taking 20 seconds of unanswered punched to his head, would folk have been praising the ref for allowing fight to continue, likely not.

Probably the worst style to try and emulate. Extremely unorthodox.

Not only that I don't see a reason to try and emulate it either unless you have brittle hands.

For me the 2:09 is the worst, it's just the sheer confusion with the "what's going on ref" expression on his face. Still trying to fight on almost not being able to realize that a fight could even BE stopped in that instance.

    Classic video though.

um yeh no yeh that means it was stopped prematurely, not that the ref was right, and he goes on to add he wanted a rematch. what planet u on?

is this some kind of joke, joes punches had zero effecrt, thats why he, on the once time he had been knocked down early in his career, panic alerted the ref. neurological damage my azz, joe never hurt anyone in his life with power. mithcell was obviously waiting for joes tank to gas, then return.

dpends if its in cardiff or not. if the welsh ref stops the slaps after 10 seconds then it sounds like the easiest money you'd ever make.

I think Joe's over zealous fans are the cause for most of the backlash. Many act as though Joe is an all time great with a stacked resume when really he's a long time titlist with 2 notable wins.

Joe had a lot of his opponents going backwards, an indication he was causing some sort of damage even if it didn't look pretty.

Why are you not telling the truth Loudon? Or is it a case of if you havent seen the links for a while you can pretend otherwise? You have seen this below and fear of flying or not he agreed to go to America for a Hopkins fight which he in fact did do when a fight was agreed

"A teleconference was set up in my office in New York for July 30th, 2002, and on the call was myself, Don King who was in the room, Frank ****** and Bernard Hopkins' lawyer, Arnold Joseph. Along with Arnold was a woman named Linda Carter, who was there on behalf of Bernard. We asked Arnold if Bernard wanted to fight Joe Calzaghe and we asked him how much money would he want if he did. The response we got was $3million and the fight would have to take place in the United States. After a little scratching of the head, we said 'Okay, done.' Frank ****** agreed on the spot, Don King agreed and we agreed so as far as we were concerned all parties were singing off the one hymm sheet. Arnold excused himself with Linda and I can only assume it was to call Bernard. Either that day or the next day, they came with a new demand: $6million, double the sum that had been agreed, the deal blew up.....he had then and still has no desire to fight Joe Calzaghe, that much is pretty clear.

Joe gets criticised sometimes for not having fought the big-name Americans, but in this case the fault has never rested with him."

    - Jay Larkin, then Showtime TV Network's Senior Vice-President of Sports and Event Programming.

I have no issue with this at all. Again, the links I saw was where Larkin was looking at Cardiff. But they were possibly from the following year in 2003. I'd have to check. I can't criticise Joe here. But we have to note that Showtime eventually dropped him, as he wasn't willing to raise his profile by fighting other fighters in the U.S.

Whilst it's okay citing the Hopkins fight and giving him a pass, you have to note that when that fight didn't materialise, he was more than happy to just continue what he'd done prior to that. He continued squeezing himself down to SMW to defend his lightly regarded WBO belt against the likes of: Salem, Ashira, Mkrtchyan and Veit etc. And this was after he knew Ottke wouldn't unify and he was given the opportunity by the WBO to fight Dariusz/Gonzalez had he have wished to have moved up to LHW.

I don't know why you always give him a pass. You aren't prepared to do this with any other fighter. Yet you keep refusing to admit that Joe is one of your favourite fighters. It's really strange. You've been doing this for the 6 years that I've known you.
