It's a bigger event and money maker. 1990 was when boxing was starting to shift from Closed Circuit to Pay Per View, and Chavez-Taylor still was on regular HBO.

I doubt Hatton is quite the figure in the UK that Chavez was in Mexico (how could he be?), but he's still very popular. Mayweather is more well known in America than Taylor ever was.

In terms of the fight itself, well, take it how you want.

    • 140 lb. unification bout between two undefeated, prime/near prime champs. #1 p4p fighter vs. another top 10 p4p fighter.
    • Undefeated 140 lb. linear champ vs. Undefeated 147 lb. linear champ, both in or very close to their primes. #1 p4p fighter against another guy ranked in the top 10.

Chavez and Taylor were probably the top two fighters in the sport at the time (maybe top three if you include Whitaker).

Hatton is probably lucky to squeeze into the top 10 at the moment and Floyd looked very vulnerable in his last fight, and really, hasn't looked all that great in the last three.

In terms of hype and it being an event, Mayweather-Hatton is probably bigger, but in a pure boxing sense, I think Chavez-Taylor was bigger.

And for what its worth, I think Chavez is a better fighter than Mayweather, and Meldrick Taylor is a better fighter than Hatton.
