Ok guys before you open up on this one here is my rationale. We all know RJ is shot and past it and has no business in the ring with any , but this mythical glass jaw thing bugs me and here's why. Roy got KO-ed by a single shot from Antonio Tarver, so obviously he doesnt have a great jaw BUT i don't see that as a glass jaw. Tarver didnt knock him down in the rematch, Johnson had to beat on Roy for 7 or 8 rounds before he went down and while Roy was done it was hitting the backof his head onthe mat that did him in for the 5 minute span, and JC did not knock him down. Throw in he's taken punches at heavyweight from Ruiz and not flinched, and taken prime punches from Hopkins and Toney at their best weights.

No, Glass JAw is overused and I don't think his chin is all that bad. It's no glass that's for sure. Lennox Lewis and Roy Jones does not have a glass jaw. Let's make that clear.

Right now yes, but that wasn't always the case. I think Tarver significantly softened up his jaw but it was solid before that. You don't go 50+ fights without being hit with hard, flush shots. RJ was never hurt until the Ruiz fight and that was momentarily.

All this started after the Tarver fight but that shot would have knocked out anybody, even a buffalo.. And in the Johnson fight, he was knocked out by a headshot, not to the chin.

No, even if he evaded most shots, he still took flush shots from lots of fighters like Toney, Hopkins, Ruiz et al. Ruiz may be an average hitter at heavyweight, but an average hitter at heavyweight is still a huge puncher to take on for a natural supermiddleweight....

The main reason he got knocked out is because he dehydrated and lost muscle to go down to 175, at the age of 35. The same thing happened to Chris Byrd, who had a very good chin that stood up to Vitali's, Tua's and Wlad's (during the first fight) shots... then he goes down to 175 at high age like Jones, and gets stopped by a light hitting LHW journeyman!

If he had a glass jaw he'd a been knocked out in the mid-ninties.

I think you have to distinguish between this Roy Jones and THE Roy Jones of many years ago.

This one has a soft jaw. Even Calzaghe briefly stunned him. The knockout defeat to Glen Johnson really speaks volumes. Glen is an okay puncher but you don't expect him to be knocking guys out cold with a single shot.

When he was at his peak, before losing so much weight quickly, he could take flush punches and show no effects. I don't even remember him being really hurt.

No, and the term glass jaw is tossed around far to much on ESB.

No, when you get older you lose your reflexes and you have harder time seeing the punches coming in, thats why Jones got knocked out twice. In his prime he was never knocked out, the same cant be said for Lewis and Wlad.

Johnson didn't KO him with 1 punch, he beat the **** out of RJJ for about 7 rds leading up to the KO punch, further more when FJJ fell, the back of his head hit hard and bounced off the canvas. Tarver KO'd RJJ with 1 shot.

Jones was well in control of his senses at the time. He was already down and out. Just check the way he fell to the canvas - it was startling.

At LHW he's a glass jaw, I feel. And contrary to what people say Jones didn't take a vicious beating from Johnson. Johnson caught Jones with some good shots but I don't think it was a particularly bad beating.

Jones' chin is a hard one to gauge.. in one sense I think Tarver caught him with a perfect shot and after that Jones was just mentally destroyed. At his best I'd say his just was shaky.. maybe average. About on the same level as Chad Dawson.

I agree. After the Tarver fight and Johnson fight something happened. The way his neck tensed up when he got KOed and he just laid there is a sign of neuron or brain damage. My wife is a doc and the first thing she said when he was down is that something really bad happened. Since then he has not performed as well and he can't take a hit.

I agree with the poster, if he had a glass jaw he would've been KO'D prior, in his prime or before it. Glass jaws get exposed often before a fighter gets to elite level -- especially at their big title fight. Saying Jones has a glass jaw then fighting at heavy and beating/taking shots from a (pretty much) natural heavy in John Ruiz who has good power, is like saying Khan is going to go up to middleweight and take shots from Jermaine Taylor.
