i've watched this fight more than once and still have no idea how Carmen won this fight. Poor little Carmen, all he did was get zapped in the face by Robbie's jab and his best shot consisted of rabbit punches. His arms are just so small and his punches didnt mean ****! you cant even say he out landed an old Robinson. i can see why he had an over inflated ego becuz he actually believed to his last breath the judges decision and becuz of that believes he deserves to share top honors with Robinson as one of the greats but the fact is, Basilio lost nearly every major middleweight fight he was in including this one

Basilio was never a true "middleweight"...just a blown up welterweight. I think he won the first SRR fight by very close decision.

I haven't watched it for some time but I remember I thought Basilio deserved the nod because of his constant and effective aggression.Basilio was 5 times in the Fight Of The Year ,only beaten by Ali with 6.Basilio was a good puncher as Kid Gavilan would attest !

Yes he did. But what does it really mean? By the time Robinson fought Basilio he was on the other side of the mountain, going into the valley. He was past his prime. All the sports writers I've read from that era knew his time had passed. It was his 149th pro fight, the losses were happening more often. He was losing to fighters he probably destroy in his prime. Basilio was awkward and aggressive, and was effective against that version of Robinson.

I thought it was a close fight. Carmen was the aggressor most of the fight though there was a lot of action both ways. Basillio was able to get inside and do good work to the body and head. Sugar Ray landed his thunder in return. With Robinson being the Champion I could have easily seen him get the decision. Carmen Basillio did earn it though. Tough fight.

i know Robbie was past it but my question is HOW did Baslio win this? It seems that nearly every round he did nothing but take jabs to the face, and rarely caught Robbie cleanly. he had two good rounds but never did any damage. In fact, it is Carmen's face that you see marked up and it is Robinson that scored much more effectively and more often. I gave Carmen four rounds at most and it's obvious that he is MUCH the smaller of the two. no way did he win this fight

yes please watch it round by round because that's what I did, and never let the newspaper decision affect my judgement. I have Robinson well ahead 11-4 in rounds.

Carmen was no spring chicken himself. He was as close to the end of his run as was Robinson, only Carmen had the good sense to hang em up.

Basillio got inside and scored a lot that night. He did take some jabs each round but he was busy and he certainly brought the fight to Robinson.
