wales has had 11 world champions, jimmy wilde, percy jones, robbie regan, steve robinson, howard winstone, barry jones, freddie welsh, gavin rees, enzo maccarinelli, joe calzaghe and nathan cleverly. with due respect to jonny owen and jim driscoll who were great fighters (but not world champs.) i think that is pretty good for a small country of less then 3 million people. great boxing countries such as i.e. mexico has over 112 million people and usa has 312 million people.so i think wales do ok for the size of our country.it was brought to my attention from another thread which said about el salvador having only 1 champ ever with a population of about 7 million.so what do you think??? p.s.just thought i`d mention puerto rico has fairly low population of under 4 million so big up to them as we know they do hold there own.:good
Yes of course. Wilde has always been an idol of mine. Joe took some time to like, but even tho I think hes overrated he has guts and determination even against fighters that are superior to him in power or skills. Almost like a throwback. Winstone pretty good solid fighter. Welsh and Wilde legends the greatest from Wales. Regarding the quality of fighters compared to the number of inhabitants in a country Id have to strongly disagree they have absolutely nothing having to do with one another. What I will say communist countries like Cuba, China, and former communist Soviet Union now Russia had strict programs training fighters from a very young age making them into olympic powerhouses. I think it has to do more with the trainers and the abilities of the fighters than where they come from. That is why there is no dominant nation that you could say has a great champion in every division.
Certainly wales has some very good amateurs also that I'm sure will make a impact on the pro game in the near future.
Cleverly being a champion is a joke, Calzaghe was a cherry picker though still a very good fighter. For such a small country though they're doing fine
