yes he was losing but he was never seriously hurt and never looked out of the fight.
sonnen landed maybe 4 meaningful shots the whole night.

 

Silva was losing on points, but it's not like the fight was as one sided as the scoring probably was. Silva dished out some damage of his own. And let's not forget, the main objective to fighting is to finish your opponent. Finishing your opponent is far superior to outpointing him.

Silva was down 4 rounds to none going into the 5th, but look at Sonnen's face going into the 5th round.

Sonnen had Silva on his back, he controlled the fight for 23 minutes, he did no significant damage and was never close to finishing the fight.
Silva controlled the fight for 15 seconds and submitted Sonnen.

That is a fight I never want to forget.

 

Who got finished? In a real fight, if someone is getting choked and no one is there to break it up, what happens?

Sonnen got finished inside the distance. Did he give a valiant effort? Yes. Would he have lost by death in a real fight? Yes.

I like the idea of your topic, but I dont think there should be an "overall ability" grade cause many ppl here including yourself have no expertise in grading "overall mma ability" and is more of a guess than anything.

Like some people on your list, I wouldnt even give a B+ in overall ability. They just happened to be pioneers in their sport and ahead of their time.

Btw the grades dont add up, some ppl have higher grades but are ranked lower.

Silva was down 4-0. Silva was on his back the entire fight. Sonnen landed twice as many punches although Silva's face can take a brick and not cut or bruise. Anyone can land a sneaky sub in at anytime, not everyone can pin Silva on his back and beat him 4 rounds in a row and 90% of the 5th round. I hate Sonnen, but he made Silva look like a ***** and controlled the **** out of him.

 

Yeah...he was all manly until he tapped. That means he would have died if Silva wanted to end it by fatality, and no one was there to stop him.

By all means, that's a victory for Chael. Much like Kongo's win over Barry was really a win for Barry.

 

that is true but anderson silva on paper has beaten more opponents than gsp, but yea sonnen has been the toughest test for anderson but i think if anderson beats okami then he should be higher on the list than gsp. Gsp imo will have his toughest test against nick diaz at UFC 137 because stylistically nick has the right tools to beat gsp it will be a question of whether nick can work off his back but my money is on nick! WAR 209!
