I was just watching the Lewis - Bruno fight and I noticed an illegal blow by Lewis leading up to the KO. Some other posters on that thread has also considered that blow illegal and that Lewis should have been disqualified or otherwise penalized(perhaps a NC call as the blow caused the KO). The ref just issues a warning and the fight continues. I also found another similar blow which Fury placed at Cunningham which also resulted in a KO. I have uploaded both scenes as gif: http://i.imgur.com/94EtEQi.gif Do you think this kind of blows should be considered illegal, and if so, what should the punishment be? Deduction? Disqualification? I think this is an illegal blow and it's a serious matter as it is quite often used by fighters especially when they go for a knock out against a wobbling fighter, and refs often turn a blind eye.
What's the rule or classification suggesting this could be illegal? Or are you just saying it should be? Maybe counts as pushing? Especially with the 2nd shot.
I watched both fights live. At the time of both knock-outs, they were going down any moment anyhow. I don't think its illegal. If Boxer A can't defend themselves from Boxer B physically pushing up their heads because they're unable to, its up to the ref to jump in early for a British stoppage. Like, what's so different from somebody pushing your head-up to actually punching you in the face? Nothing. If a boxer is able to push your head into position, that tells me your head is already about to go or has already gone. Bruno was done before that happened. So was SC
I think it is illegal. Referees often warn a fighter not to leave their jab out to the face of the other fighter. In these two cases, the risk of the infraction was worth it.
"You can't hold your opponent and hit him at the same time" Pushing/holding your opponents head is a wrestling type of move making him effectively defenseless. I'm almost certain it's illegal. Perhaps someone else can explain it better. That's why I'm asking for opinions. In the Lennox blow there's also a violation of using an open glove/palm area instead of a proper punch if it were to be(although shouldn't be) considered a blow rather than a push.
Difference is, it's not boxing. Boxing is not a sport where you can interfere with your opponent's defense by doing anything but punching - it's free style/MMA type of fighting. You can't squeeze your opponent onto the ropes by leaning onto him and using your body as a shield against his arms and just punch him like that. Like I said, I'm almost sure this is illegal, I just need opinions from people with actual ring experience or who has seen enough to know. I respect your opinion though. By the way, Bruno about to be going down at the time of the blow doesn't make the blow legal, if it's illegal, there can be a punishment, be it DQ, No contest, simple warning, or otherwise.
both illegal moves. Open glove in the face is not allowed, I guess everyone watching boxing knows that. And the upperarm in the face one is just as illegal. But the bigger name and/or homefighter mostly gets away with things like that. His opponent could lose by DQ though.
Lewis always flings out his false jab before delivering his big shots. Bruno just happened to be closer than usual against the ropes. Ask yourself, WHY THE **** would Lewis cheat when he was about to score the KO in a second anyhow? It was a spur of the moment thing. The Fury one was almost illegal for me, because it was a clinch. Still, this is boxing. you don't let 7foot giants clinch you or you go down like a sack fo ****. Rabbit punches are ok, if you can get away with it. Its happened since boxing began.
Both are illegal. Fury's forearm is more blatant though. Lewis' glove in the face can easily be swiped away it's harder to do that with a forearm to the face or throat.
Lewis was going for the KO and Bruno was still able to ditch the most obvious power punches, he had ditched the one right before this uppercut - he could or could not make it to the end of the round, but that punch pretty much sealed the deal. But this is not important, why Lennox would cheat is not the point here, point is whether it's illegal or not. I don't ask this to taint Lennox's victory, he'd most likely win anyway, I use this as an example to find out what should happen in these circumstances as this happens very frequently in many fights.
If it happened many times in 1 fight, sure. DQ after a warning. In the instances above. Looked ok to me. The ref should have jumped in.
Huge Lewis fan here. He's my favorite fighter. Yeah, that stiff arm in the face is kind of a dirty move. Refs tend not to warn fighters about it. That elbow form Fury falls in the same category. It's a hard foul to call due to it not really being holding and hitting, but it sort of is at the same time. Bruno was on his way out anyway. I don't think there would be any reason to deduct a point or warn at that juncture. Hardly a dq worthy foul either. Fighter would have to do it repeatedly for admonishment. That fight was over.
