Do you think Top Rank has done a horrible job promoting Cotto-Margo?

Margarito isn't a draw in Vegas nor is Cotto. But Cotto is a huge draw at the Garden but I think Arum did the math and realized he could get more millions in casino license fees.

    I think Arum's a *****, and I bet he'd like to suck it.

Dude's sitting on gold in multiple fighters and is doing **** to actually try and grow their following. He's got the kind of lineup that has the potential to bring boxing back to free TV if he weren't so set in his damn Ebeneezer Scrooge like ways.

You guys are all right. It's quite ridiculous if you ask me. I honestly dont believe that any average joe on the street has ever heard of Margarito or Cotto. I live in north carolina where the mexican population is huge and I would doubt that many of them know who Margarito is. Most of the mexicans around here are soccer fans. The few puerto ricans that I meet mostly follow baseball but they do know who Cotto is and watch his fights.

I know mexicans are very proud people and love their athletes. If they saw some commercials on TV that hit on the PR vs Mexico rivalry, I guarantee that they would buy the fight regardless of whether or not they are a fan.

Since I'm a teacher at a high school, i try to talk to a lot of the students about boxing. It's too bad it's summer time right now b/c I'd be hyping this fight to all the mexican students trying to get them to get this fight. But i'm only one person.

Promoters need to get some TV time. I dont care if it is on Spike channel. Just get us something.

Another reason as to why fights are not selling out like before are the site fee's. Once promoters secure their site fee's, they stop promoting in that area, then is up to the owners of the site to do their own promotion so that they dont loose any money. Look at what happened to TITO vs ROY, King collected over 8 Million in site fee and no one attended, it was empty.. King didnt care, he had his money

It was Arum decision not to do a 24/7 on the fight, and since his is the promoter , selling this fight sits squarely on his shoulders alone not HBOs

I'm curious about something. We sit here saying that Arum should do this and that, etc...(myself included) However, I wonder just how much money top rank has. I'm sure they dont have as much money to spend as an NFL team or other sports team, etc... Commercials easily cost millions of dollars for just a few seconds of air time. Can they actually afford to have a few commercials???

I'm sure they have enough, but they are scared to use it b/c unlike the 4 major sports, there is no guarantee they will make the money back with a good profit.

Very horrible job to be honest, how the hell didn't this fight sell enough?
They did a better job promoting Margarito/Gomez and Cotto/Gomez, this is just silly. :patsch

Arum is the type of promoter that will not take risk , if there is a chance he could take a big loss, which is why his fighters fight each other most of the time.

Unfortunately for the sport of boxing they have done a horrible job promoting this fight. But if I separate myself from being a fan and only a bottom-line guy, it makes total sense.

Whether an event is in the sporting world or having to do with something else, the amount of money you spend to promote and advertise your event must have a direct impact on your sales. In addition to this obvious desired outcome not all advertising (regardless of type or amount) will have an impact.

Fringe boxing fans don’t know much if anything about either Cotto or Margarito. And since it is a Pay-Per-View event it would take a lot of convincing and prior knowledge of the fighters to get them to order the event. It is unlikely that enough of these type of fans would order the fight to justify the amount of money that would have to be spent.

On the other hand, hardcore fans know this may be the fight of the year and is a “must see”. Word of mouth, boxing websites, and message boards like this one automatically create a “buzz” without having to spend a penny. A promoter knows this fact and thus does not need to drop money on what are guaranteed dollars.

Again, sad for boxing but smart money-wise.

In one of the Cotto vs Margo press conferences Arum blasts HBO for not even doing a Countdown. Then there was this article written recently where the journalist also puts HBO on blast.

Im not sure were you are getting that Arum did not want a 24/7 series. Never heard that before.

Okay -- This is a little off topic, but it goes to the heart of the matter. Yesterday I was at the barber shop. While I was waiting I happened to pick up a Sports Illustrated from back on January 28th. There was a big spread on Tito/Jones, but not one freaking word on the Pavlik/Taylor rematch. Are boxing promoters and HBO so lame that they can't get S.I. to cover a fight as significant as that rematch? I mean what the hell happens in these cases?

Arum ought to line up the biggest fight card in years and he could do it if he wanted to. Put Pavlik, Pacquiao and Cotto / Margarito winner on the same card. And put the thing on ABC at 8PM for free.

    AND.

Make sure the opponents are very good.

Yes I know there are a multitude of hurdles for something like this, BUT, it COULD happen. And if it DID, it would be HUGE.

It could change the game completely. The advertising dollars would be nuts and the NEXT even would be even bigger with all the big sponsors shelling out money and the casual fans growing like crazy.

Have Pacquiao headline vs Marquez for Pac Marquez 3.
    Pavlik can take on Abraham.
Cotto / Margarito rematch if the first one was good, or else the winner takes on Mosley or Williams or someone up there at 147.

Then of course, you could have one or maybe two opening fights on the network, PLUS three or four opening bouts on ESPN 2 before that and before that the first three or four openers could be on Yahoo.

Then, make the event at some huge huge outdoor venue in a major city like Los Angeles and make the tickets cheap. Set up big screens and make it an all day event.

Tie the whole thing into something like American Idol so the fans seeing it live get a half time show with some singers or a rock band of sorts right before the final three fights. For viewers at home this will be a break between the final two undercards and three main fights.

And those two undercards will probably be stellar names as well.

Obviously, everyone has to take a pay cut of sorts but the way you get around that is that you cut everyone in the gate and the ad revenue. Something.

I guarantee that something like this would IMMEDIATELY infattuate the casual fan. Not the garbage that fat ass gives us with Kimbo.
