Do you turn your nose up at boxer who "quit" during fights?

It also didn't help that Freitas went up on his trainer's shoulders and started beating his chest after he quit.

 

My boxing knowledge isn't huge but does anyone think that fighters quit more in recent times than they did a while back - say before 1960? Is it a growing trend?

 

Running a marathon, playing AFL, Rugby, rowing a boat and pretty much most other sports don't involve someone actively and aggressively trying to destroy your physical well being as part of his or her goal in the competition. That point alone separates boxing from other sports and makes them incomparable imo with regards to quitting.

Simple fact is people aren't machines either. There's a billion things that can affect your mind, attitude and fortitude in the lead up to a fight and getting beaten to a pulp once your mind has 'cracked' that barrier is a mean feat.

Also like someone else mentioned, the Ref can't see brain trauma, they can't feel what the fighter feels and I think one thing fighters do less than quitting is telling the ref exactly how they feel.

I also dont think it was a clear headed Tszyu in that ring if that's what you mean. If so, you're point works against your favour - no a clear headed Tszyu wouldn't walk out of a fight. A f*cked up Tszyu who couldn't even answer his trainer when asked "Can you go on?" between the round might quit - and i believe Lewis made the decision for him anyway??

I understand your point and you are right, it's is a matter of subjective opinion - quitting should not be accepted as a way out of a fight CIRCUMSTANCES PERMITTING. None of this 'unacceptable' sh*t

I agree...so if a fighter goes into a defensive shell he is not a quitter but if someone like cotto goes for it all and gets battered til he just can't move anymore he is a quitter...yeash to a keyboard warrior he may be...but he def isn't in real life

If it's a choice between getting battered around in an unwinnable situation or quitting, quitting is the best option. Boxers have to think about their health and future career. This macho never give in attitude is dangerous and not very clever!

 

Quiiting against Diaz was more acceptable than the Chico loss.

He hasnt won a definite single round, was getting battered and Juan Diaz took his best shot and still came after him.

THe chico quit was simply disgraceful, he outboxed chico for a majority of the fight, then got knockdown a few times with his senses still intact and just walked to his corner with a no mas. He was still very much in the fight and possibly was still ahead despite the knockdowns.

 

Im not giving much of a pass to Tszyu as the same reason people here are.
Yeah he took alot of punishment but so did Hatton, that fight was still competitive, however if Tszyu quitted on his stool because he knew there was no way to win a decision with the hometown judges and the ref would find a way to save Hatton if Hatton got knocked down or knocked out then yeah thats understandable.

Vazquez quit in the first Marquez fight,yet showed immense courage in coming back to stop him in the rematch.He was floored early in the rubber match and was behind on points but came back to win again showing great courage.

 

Gatti and Frazier were stopped by the trainer's.I do believe Tszyu quit on his own accord.
