Do you view a Lewis vs Klitschko rematch was really necessary?

Tyson's my hero, but I don't spend all day whining about how Lewis beat him well past his prime. A long pro and amateur career retired Lewis, Vitali just happened to be one tough fight too many.

lewis has planed a fight with roy jones, before vitali! than why he dropped 20 mill's for rematch and sit on his belt almost 2 years, before he retires? ask for medical certificate etc.

It was not nearly as decisive a win as revisionists would like to believe. it was very controversial at the time and still is. A rematch would have been necessary if Lewis wanted to continue to reign as the undisputed Champion. Vitali also did a good job of adapting to Lennox's right hand after the third round, slipping Lennox's future attempts despite the damage already being done, a rematch would been interesting.

I was responding to Zenek who seems to think Lewis is my hero. I think he's a great fighter, as is Vitali, but I don't think he should have risked a rematch as much as I'd like to have seen one if he didn't feel up to it. Lewis had done enough in his career to retire with dignity. Vitali will have to face that choice one day and I'm sure most reasonable boxing fans won't complain about it.

LOL at the *very stupid* people who say that a rematch wasn't warranted. When a fighter puts in a solid display, is up the scorecards and loses on cuts that fighter deserves a rematch. Vitali got that fight on short notice too, people should remember that before saying "Lewis out of shape" and stuff like that.

Vitali not getting a rematch left for unfinished business. But Lewis knew a rematch at that point would have been too risky. Vitali vs Lewis 2 would have made the headlines bigtime, but Lewis chose to retire. I find it stupendous that some (mostly british, what's new) argue against a rematch. The match was never decisive in any way shape or form. By the way it ended... it needed a rematch. It was Lewis's call not to take it, but please, stop pretending like it didn't warrant one.

Lewis was an old man, and had paid his dues to the sport and had the right to retire on his own terms.

Why is that so hard to accept?

Forgetting all the hw nostalgia I would say they are both extremely good heawyes in any era, possible the two bests ones. I know its lot to say but they are/were very gifted, dedicated and physically superiors compared to anyone.

No doubt he had the right, but that does not change the fact that from a boxing perspective, there should have been a rematch.

Well..... perhaps. Would I have watched it? Yes, definitely.

But - I'm not sure even Vitali himself believes he could repeat that performance against Lennox twice. That's a credit to him for raising himself to perform as he did..... but there's only so many times you can go to the well.

He got the fight with Lennox and performed very well, but came up short. Nothing to be ashamed of at all. Beating an older Lennox or losing worse to a more motivated one wouldn't change anything.

There's loads of rematches that ought to have happened immediately. A Leonard/Hearns rematch, DLH/Trinidad, DLH/Mosley, etc etc.

Lewis was an old 37 and had been in lots of hard fights.

Vitali is 39, but spent the majority of his earlier career facing weak opponents, then later had a four year layoff and came back into one of the weakest divisions in history.

The only really hard fights he'd had are Lennox and Sanders. The rest he's dominated pretty easily.

    Lewis was old and uninterested.
An uninterested Lewis got sparked by b-rated fighters. Vitali had a poor uninterested Lewis in front of him and still got beat. Lewis had 20 odd title fights and nothing to prove. If they fought five years earlier the arguement for a rematch would be fair. Not when Lewis is 37.

Arguing Vitali is 39 is a poor arguement. Boxers age differently for every Vitali, Hopkins or Archie Moore there are a hundred champions who faded in their early 30's. Should Ali have had a rematch with Tyson since he would have been younger than Hopkins? How about Joe Louis fighting a young Ali in 1960?

I do not want to see Holyfield's or Roy Jones fighting when they are a shadow of themselves.

A rematch against a faded champ to boost another fighters ego is the last think you should campagn for. Vitali should have got a life for himself, instead of living off getting beat by Lewis.

See for yourself. Thumb is sticking out, then closes and goes right into eye socket. WBC essentially did that by leaving Vitali mandatory contender that only happens in case of a draw or no contest.
