I would like the old way of judging, were newspapers would decided.

    I've just looked into it.

There were no judges and the ref was merely looking for a KO or the towel. The fight was apparently quite even. After 110 rounds (over 7 hours) neither man was able to come out for round 111 and the ref stopped the fight declaring a no contest.

Lord only knows how many punches were exchanged, however Burke had broken every bone in both hands and had to retire. Meanwhile Bowen was killed in his very next fight; he was only 27 years old. Tragic.

you need a ref or there would be lots of holding and clinching and probably some fouling too

refs keep order and make the guys fight clean and within the rules

How about special guest referees like in WWF. Imagine Fat Dan geared up in one of them black and white striped kits counting Cintron out when he went through the announcers table (after having the sound system removed, of course)

I don't know about eating (doubtful), but there was no sleeping going on. The rounds for Bowen v Burke were 3 minutes each with a minute between rounds.

Bowen v Burke is longest ever gloved fight on record.

My point is, a fight without a referee and judges is indeed crap. This thread emphasizes the fact that we can't just leave the 2 fighters punch each other out and determine the last man standing as the winner.

There have been a lot of fights that were decided controversially, not just the recent Pacquiao-Marquez fight, either because the referee was perceived to be incompetent or negligent, or because the judges' scores were contrary to what the viewers expected.

Both Pacquiao and Marquez did their best inside the ring. They both knew that if they couldn't knock each other out, or the referee did not stop the fight for whatever reason, the winnner will be decided through the judges' scorecards. We can't just cry robbery everytime and shout it out everywhere when the decision is not in our favor.

We should all move on and be thankful that we witnessed 3 great fights from Pacquiao and Marquez. Neither are hype jobs. They are legends in their own right. Truth is, win or lose, who the better fighter is depends on who you're talking to.
