Do you watch MMA for the sporting competition, or just for the brutal violence?

For me, I like combat sports, emphasis on sports.

I like a brutal standup war. But I really don't like it when arms get broken, and I HATE it when someone is clearly knocked out and his opponent doesn't have any self-control and lands two or three more punches to the head of a guy who is already stretched out asleep on the canvas.

That's why I don't like the PRIDE fights so much. Because to me, soccer kicking someone's head and stomping the **** out of them and kneeing them in the head while they're on the ground is not a sporting competition, that's an ugly street fight.

    But that's me.

Which aspect of MMA appeals more to you?

    Athletic competition, or sheer violence?

For the sport aspect of it, although I do enjoy the violence of it as well. I loved Pride

Allow me to take a shot at scurla here.

In the "dream match of all time" thread, scurla's responses were ALL focused purely on maximum violence. Every single one of them.

Which made an audible "click" in my head, and I suddenly realized why he, and a lot of the PRIDE fanboys, are such bitter, hate-filled bitches.

Because they're not fans of MMA as a sport.

They're only fans of seeing people get their heads kicked in.

Out of all the possible dream matchups in MMA history, Melvin Manhoef makes the final cut over every single legend of the sport?

Love heart eyes at the thought of Fedor vs Vovchanchyn? :-(

No fan of MMA expresses excitement at the thought of a legend getting stretchered out of the ring, or even thinks that this would somehow enhance the fight. You weren't satisfied with the fight as it happened? Shogun and Hendo didn't beat ENOUGH **** out of each other for you already, you want to see them hurt each other even more? :-(

I used scurla to illustrate the point becuase his posts made me think of it, but it's not just him. There are a lot of guys here who I think are in the same camp. How many of them will admit it though? :yep

I watch it for the sport BUT I want soccer kick, foot stomp and knee to the head of a down opponent back !

Nothing pissed me more off then watching a guy not being able to land a good knee to the head because the ****** is standing, bent over and one of is hand is touching the ground...

    Stupid rule.

Or when a guy is pressed against the cage about to get up and is opponent doesn't want to throw the knee because he may miss and hit the head.

The Charles Oliveira stoppage was beautiful....but tunred into a no-contest.

We need to bring back the knee to the head !!

No skill involved in kicking and stomping you're opponent while he is down on the ground.. Nothing appealing about this unless you're a blood thirsty fan of violence.

I'd rather see every loser on a card have a limb snapped than watch someone get soccer kicked.

Def the competition for me.. I like a close contest that goes the distance just as much as the finish.

Both. Competition allows me to find out who is the best when it comes to [scientific] violence.

i agree but funnily enough i really only watch boxing to see someone get knocked down or out.
i watch mma for the skills and intelligence factor. i love watching a fight develop into a chess match. thats probably why demian maia is my favourite fighter and three of my favourite fights ever are joe stevenson vs george sots, mayhem miller vs jake shields and renato verrissimo vs carlos newton because they are just beautiful displays of a fighter thinking whilst performing.

Sport, (but I likeD Pride much better than ufc. )
I really don't like fighters getting brutally knocked out, why? I want a back and forth action fight that lasts at least 3 rounds, in MMA, and over 8 in Boxing, short fights and easy brutal Knock Outs or Submissions are boring and disappointing, I rather watch little action Boxing chess match or mma chess match, then a second round brutal KO, or a 30 second round KO, Choke, or submission.

Id like to see stomps punts and knees allowed everytime Bones fights. Guy needs a big dose of his own medicine (extreme brutality)
