I think structurally punch resistance gets weaker as you age just because of age if nothing else, but I'd also assume there's a factor of weakness to it, too.

Iron Chinned fighters don't get knocked out. Margarito had a very good Chin but it wasn't Iron. If it was Iron he would not have been Ragdolled by an old Mosley.

Hagler, Vitali Klitschko, Chuvalo, McCall, etc. their Chins did not wilt with age.

Iron Chins exist in Boxing. They are warriors.

Untested?, didn't he take flush shots from Lewis even with one size of his face heavily cut?. How about the punches he took against Arreola and Sanders?.

Vitali took an uppercut from Lewis that would have decapitated most HW's, not to mention the other shots. He kept coming forward. He also took some quick short shots from Sanders that managed to buzz him. His chin is proven.

It's often hard to judge how good a fighters chin is if he is a really good defensive fighter. So the jury is always gonna be out on guys like Floyd. Obviously the opposite is true with fighters who have faced high level opponents and have limited defensive skills. Chavez jr is a good example of a guy with great punch resistance. Chuvallo had a legendary jaw too which took him a long way for fighter with a limited skillset.

There have been plenty of cases of fighters who could walk through shots throughout much of their career losing their resistance as time goes on. Mayorga, Antuofermo and Tex Cobb are three examples of this.

Most of them have it their entire careers.

Most of them also end up with braindamage because they took shots that would KO other fighters and then took a couple more as the fights went on.
Chin holds up, the braincells don't.

Vitali rarely faces competition with the ability to hit him. When he does, he's been badly hurt and forced to hang on (e.g. Lewis, Sanders). He has a great chin but he is no McCall.

Mayorga is a prime example of how a great chin can decline when being cracked frequently over a period of time. He used to laugh off flush shots, even free shots (which we've all seen). The status of his chin was without question......until it took one too many. When your chin is your primary defense, of course it can decline. A lot of iron chinned guys with longevity also have/had some defensive know how, and weren't taking as frequent, consistent bombs.

Wach's chin won't wear down even in his death. His body will decompose leaving a gigantic invulnerable chin.
